It looks like Anthony Santander could return to the Toronto Blue Jays sooner rather than later.
In his seventh rehab game with the Buffalo Bisons, the switch-hitting outfielder hit his second home run of the rehab stint, a 111.5 mph rocket that travelled a distance of 385 feet. Moreover, it was from the right side of the plate, the side where he’s lagged behind a bit. He also had a very long home run trot, lasting over 40 seconds.
So far in his rehab stint, Santander is slashing .200/.310/.480 with two home runs in 29 plate appearances, striking out six times and walking four times. In the big leagues this season, the 30-year-old is slashing .179/.273/.304 with six home runs in 209 plate appearances for a 63 wRC+, but was starting to find his game near the end of April before his shoulder started acting up.
It’s believed Santander will remain with the Bisons as they play their final three games of the season over the weekend, but MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson reported that Blue Jays manager will speak to Santander at some point on Thursday.
Santander’s bat in the Blue Jays could be a big help, as the offence sputtered in their four-game series against the Rays. Adding Santander would mean they’d get another bat that can do damage, especially if Santander can find the form that he had in 2024 when he hit 44 home runs with the Baltimore Orioles.
A big reason for the offence’s struggles against the Rays was because of the absence of Bo Bichette, who will be out for the rest of the season with a PCL sprain in his knee. Without Bichette hitting behind him, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has lost protection in the lineup and has been trying to do too much. Santander can remedy that.
Assuming all goes well over the weekend, it doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibilities that Santander could join the Blue Jays when they return home to host the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday. The outfielder hitting a home run from the right side is encouraging.
