It’ll be scoreboard-watching and then possibly a meaningful Game 162 for the Blue Jays.
After handily winning the series opener with the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, the Blue Jays got dropped by a score of 7-5 in extra innings on Saturday.
A win would have punched Toronto’s ticket to the playoffs but now they’ll have to wait to see the outcome of the game between the Seattle Mariners and the Texas Rangers later in the day. If the Rangers beat the Mariners, Seattle won’t be able to catch Toronto in the standings and the Blue Jays would be guaranteed a playoff berth.
If not, the Blue Jays will go into the final day of the season in need of a win to guarantee their spot in the playoffs.
Hyun Jin Ryu got the start for the Blue Jays and allowed two earned runs on seven hits and only struck out one batter. He was pulled after three innings and Trevor Richards came into the game and cleared through the fourth inning but allowed a two-run homer in the fifth.
Clean innings from Erik Swanson, Yimi Garcia, Jordan Romano, and Jordan Hicks put the Blue Jays in a spot where they could win the game with a walk-off but George Springer’s two-out double was stranded. Hicks came out for another inning in the 10th and got tagged for three earned runs. Bo Bichette doubled home a run in the bottom of the 10th but it wasn’t enough as the Rays won by a score of 7-5.
