By George, he’s done it!
On Friday, the 2025 Louisville Silver Slugger Award winners from the American League were revealed, as announced through a partnership with FanSided, with George Springer taking home hardware at the designated hitter position. He was also nominated as an outfielder, but lost out to the trio of Aaron Judge, Riley Greene and Bryon Buxton.
This is Springer’s third career Silver Slugger Award, following wins in 2017 and ’19, both coming with the Houston Astros. He has now captured this award during his age-27, 29 and (amazingly) 35 seasons.
For those wondering, the record for the oldest player to win a Silver Slugger trophy currently sits at 40 years old — consisting of a six-way tie between David Ortiz, Nelson Cruz, Edgar Martinez, Dave Winfield, Carlton Fisk and Pete Rose.
Springer, like many of those Hall-of-Fame names above, defied Father Time all season long with his turn-back-the-clock performance, which included 32 home runs and 84 RBIs — both his most as a Blue Jay, and the most of his career since 2019. He also posted career-highs in AVG (..309) and OBP (.399), while producing his second-highest SLG (.560).
The 36-year-old slugger’s 166 wRC+ (100 league average) finished third in the majors, behind only Shohei Ohtani (172) and Judge (204) — the two MVP front-runners in their respective leagues.
Despite starting 82 of his 140 games played at DH and enduring the worst defensive performance of his career, Springer still accounted for 5.2 fWAR — the second-highest rating of his 12 MLB seasons, and good for eighth among qualified AL hitters.
One year ago, it seemed Springer’s best days were long gone. Now, he’s been crowned as one of the top performers in the AL from this past season, becoming the seventh player to earn that honour in franchise history since 2015 — joining Josh Donaldson (twice), Teoscar Hernández (twice), Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (twice), Marcus Semien and Alejandro Kirk.
Guerrero and Bo Bichette were also nominated at first base and shortstop, respectively, though neither proved victorious at their positions. The Blue Jays were nominated for the Offensive Team of the Year Award, but fell short to their AL East rival — the New York Yankees.
