The Toronto Blue Jays have a handful of players up for the Silver Slugger Award.
On Thursday morning, the finalists for the annual award were announced, with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. being a finalist for first base, Bo Bichette being a finalist for shortstop, and George Springer being a finalist for both the outfield and designated hitter. The team is also a finalist for the Silver Slugger Team Award.
It was a great rebound season for Bichette after a disastrous 2024. In 628 plate appearances, Bichette slashed .311/.357/.483 with 18 home runs for a 134 wRC+, the best mark of his career. His 181 hits finished second in the league, with only Bobby Witt Jr.’s 184 hits surpassing his total. It’s worth noting that Bichette missed the final three weeks of the season. Witt Jr. is also nominated for the Silver Slugger Award at shortstop, as is Jeremy Peña of the Houston Astros.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. didn’t have quite the same season as the year before, but it was still an incredibly productive season for the 26-year-old. In 680 plate appearances, the first baseman slashed .292/.381/.467 with 23 home runs for a 137 wRC+. He’s up against Athletics’ Nick Kurtz and Kansas City Royals’ first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino. Even if he doesn’t win the Silver Slugger, the ALCS MVP will more than likely suffice for Guerrero Jr.
Lastly, Springer was nominated for both the DH and outfield Silver Slugger awards. In the designated hitter role, Springer slashed .326/.415/.606 with 25 home runs in 359 plate appearances for a 183 wRC+. Of players with 100 or more plate appearances as a designated hitter, he ranked only behind Aaron Judge’s 191 wRC+. Yes, Springer ranked ahead of Shohei Ohtani and Kyle Schwarber. Other AL designated hitters up for the award are Yandy Díaz and Brent Rooker.
Springer was still a productive hitter when playing in the outfield this season. In 220 plate appearances when playing in the outfield, Springer slashed .286/377/.497 with seven home runs for a 142 wRC+. That ranked 11th-best in MLB, and sixth-best in the American League. Funnily enough, his teammate, Davis Schneider, finished with a 147 wRC+ when he played as an outfielder.
That said, there was one robbery. In 2025, Alejandro Kirk slashed .282/.348/.421 with 15 home runs in 506 plate appearances for a 116 wRC+. While Cal Raleigh will undoubtedly win the Silver Slugger for catchers, the fact that Salvador Perez finished as a nominee instead of Kirk is a travesty. Last season, Perez finished with 30 home runs and a 95 wRC+, while playing over 60 games between designated hitter and first base. Kirk should’ve been nominated.
Additionally, the team is a finalist for the Silver Slugger Team Award, alongside the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners. As a whole, the Blue Jays slashed .265/.333/.427 with 191 home runs in 6,180 plate appearances, giving them a 112 wRC+. That ranks the Blue Jays tied for the fourth-highest wRC+.
Winners of the award will be announced on November 7.
