The Toronto Blue Jays are considered the “favourites” in the Kyle Tucker sweepstakes, despite the rumbling noise of various other clubs. Toronto is an attractive landing spot for the outfielder, and the Jays are one club that could really use the free agent on their roster.
When looking at the Blue Jays’ depth chart, one may think Tucker does not fit in much. When looking at the bigger picture pertaining to the future of the Jays’ outfield, it makes more sense.
The club was quite successful overall in their season, despite the Game 7 loss in the World Series. Each player had a contribution of some sort that assisted in their postseason run. Looking ahead, the Blue Jays need to consider the retention of their outfield.
Potential future losses from the Blue Jays’ outfield
The Blue Jays’ outfield picture is a bit murky past 2026.
Daulton Varsho is eligible for arbitration this winter and will be a free agent following the 2026 season. If the Blue Jays want to extend him past next season, they will have to weigh the pros and cons when it comes to the defensive-minded centre fielder. Regardless, if they don’t re-sign Varsho long term, he’s got just one more year on the books.
George Springer has one more season left in Toronto; after 2026, he will be a free agent. Springer had a huge impact on the 2025 Blue Jays, being one of the faces of an American League Championship club. Springer will be looking for an extension or a new home. His shelf life is slowly vaporizing, being 36 years old. These are considering factors the Blue Jays need to pay attention to, especially if he can’t replicate his impressive campaign.
Anthony Santander is locked up until 2030, with an opt-out clause in 2028. There’s one outfielder who could be here for a while and has the potential to be an offensive factor if he turns it around. His defensive abilities are lacking compared to the rest of the crew, and he struggled in his inaugural campaign in Toronto, making fans hope that things will turn around quickly.
In conjunction with Santander, Addison Barger, and Nathan Lukes, why not pad the outfield and offensive capabilities with Santander and Tucker?
Does Tucker fit the picture in Toronto?
The Blue Jays are arguably one or two pieces away from being World Champions. The club they recently took to the World Series was highly capable, but a “nail in the coffin” off-season approach could be what they need, starting with the biggest bat on the market.
Tucker is a four-time All-Star, which was within the last four seasons. He’s an all-around option that provides value at each part of the game. His offense would be the main sell, being a player with power and run production. He has home run ability and hard-hitting gap-to-gap ability. Tucker led the NL in RBIs in 2023 (112) and also added 29 home runs and 163 hits. His 2024 performance was also impressive despite having more than 200 fewer at-bats, amassing 23 home runs, 49 RBIs, and 80 hits on 277 at-bats, producing a 4.7 bWAR.
Between these three teams I think the Blue Jays are the likeliest to be the highest bidder for Kyle Tucker. The question becomes is money the most important objective for Tucker. Or will geography play a bigger role.
In 2025, he finished with 22 home runs, 73 RBIs, 133 hits, and 87 walks versus 88 strikeouts. Tucker has a great eye, with good pitch recognition, and confidence in his approach. The outfielder is also stealth on the base pads, being a game-changer with his running. Across four seasons, Tucker has 91 stolen bases and has been caught stealing only 12 times. His offensive production, run support, and speed will put the Blue Jays’ lineup at an advantage, adding another considerable threat.
Fielding-wise, Tucker is very sound and a stellar defensive player. He had a .989 fielding percentage in the outfield, committing only three errors.
Tucker’s left-handed bat will be a solid addition in conjunction with the hot Blue Jays lineup, including Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Alejandro Kirk, Barger, Springer, hopefully Bo Bichette and more.
