Blue Jays place LHP Matt Gage on unconditional release waivers

The Toronto Blue Jays have placed left-hander Matt Gage on unconditional release waivers for the purpose of contract termination, the team announced on Monday.
Gage, a 10th-round selection from 2014, was designated for assignment last week after the club made Chad Green’s two-year, $8.5-million contract official.
Gage’s departure from the organization is a little surprising, especially considering Tim Mayza is the sole left-handed reliever on Toronto’s 40-man roster, excluding Yusei Kikuchi. The release is believed to be mutual, per source, with the 29-year-old seeking another opportunity elsewhere.
The 6-foot-3, 265-pound lefty signed with the Blue Jays in November 2021 and ultimately made his major-league debut last season following seven minor-league campaigns. He made 11 appearances, posting a 1.38 ERA, a 3.88 FIP and 12 strikeouts across 13 innings.
In 2017, Gage was named a mid-season Eastern League All-Star and also earned a Pitcher of the Week honour with San Francisco’s double-A affiliate.
Gage has been with five franchises (San Francisco, New York Mets, Colorado, Arizona, Toronto) since being drafted by the Giants nearly 10 years ago.
