Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is heading for the record books.
The Toronto Blue Jays first baseman was honoured with the inaugural Entertainer of the Year Award at last night’s MLB Awards ceremony. His Godfather, Pedro Martinez, accepted the award on Guerrero’s behalf.
Presented by MGM Rewards, this is the first year for the Award, and Guerrero was honoured alongside Athletics outfielder and Canadian Denzel Clarke, who was presented with the first-ever Capital One Premier Play for his wall-scaling catch against the Los Angeles Angels.
From his manerisms on the field to his bat flip in the postseason, Guerrero takes home the award after inking the largest contract in franchise history at 14 years and $500 million earlier this season. Every time he stepped on the field, he was providing energy, and the MLB commented on the award for Guerrero that he “shined both on and off the field this season”.
On top of his home run trot antics and the ‘Daaa Yankees Lose’ chant following the Jays’ ALDS win, Guerrero was one of the most impactful bats in Toronto’s lineup this season.
Producing a 4.6 bWAR, Guerrero finished the regular season with a .292/.381/.467 slash line and a .848 OPS. The Jays’ first baseman also racked up a 133 OPS+ while finishing the campaign with a .313 BABIP and an 11.9% walk rate to go with his 34 doubles, 23 home runs, and 84 RBIs. In the postseason, Guerrero kicked things up a notch, collecting 29 hits (.397) while also adding five home runs, 15 RBIs, and 14 walks en route to a 1.289 OPS.
Guerrero finished in the 100th percentile for xBA (.306) and finished above the 90th percentile in numerous categories – hard-hit% (50.7), chase% (21.4), K% (13.8), xSLG (.497), xwOBA (.384), and in bat speed (76.7 MPH) – while also ranking in the 97th percentile in batting run value (+38).
On the field, Guerrero found himself in the Gold Glove conversation again, producing a +8 DRS while making just nine errors on the year, good for a .994 fielding percentage.
Guerrero also earned All-MLB First Team honours last night, while former teammate and current free agent Bo Bichette earned a Second Team nod.
