The Milwaukee Brewers have added two hitting coaches who have ties to the Toronto Blue Jays.
On Monday afternoon that both Daniel Vogelbach and Guillermo Martínez as hitting coaches, serving under Eric Theisen, the lead hitting coach.
Vogelbach had two different stints with the Blue Jays. Before the 2020 trade deadline, the Jays sent cash considerations to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for his services, with the first baseman receiving just five plate appearances. His other stint came in 2024, as he signed a minor league deal with the team in Feb. 2024, making the opening day roster. Both times, he was designated for assignment.
The first time, back in 2020, is how he found his way to the Brewers, as they claimed him off waivers. Along with the Brewers, Vogelbach had stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets after his first stint with the Blue Jays, serving as a special hitting assistant with the Pirates in 2025.
Vogelbach’s career will be most known for his time with the Mariners. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 2011, but was traded to the Mariners in 2016. The first baseman made his debut that season, registering just 13 plate appearances in 2016 and 31 in 2017. It wasn’t until 2019 when Vogelbach became a regular, hitting .208/.341/.439 with 30 home runs in 558 plate appearances for a 112 wRC+.
Martínez served as the Blue Jays’ hitting coach from 2018 until 2024, joining the organization in 2012. After the Jays and Martínez parted ways following the 2024 season, he served as the hitting coach for the Chicago Cubs’ Double-A affiliate, the Knoxville Smokies’ in 2025.
This came shortly after the news that the Philadelphia Phillies have hired Don Mattingly a bench coach, as the should-be Hall of Famer spent the past three seasons with the Blue Jays.  Another former Blue Jay on a coaching staff is John Gibbons, who will serve as a bench coach for the Los Angeles Angels in 2026.
