The Buffalo Bisons band is getting back together.
On Friday afternoon, it was reported that the Blue Jays were recalling Addison Barger. To make room for the young left-handed hitter, they designated Daniel Vogelbach for assignment.
Barger had a cup of coffee with the team early this season, slashing .056/.056/.056 in 18 appearances with a single and an RBI. However, Barger hit .256/.380/.467 with eight homers in 217 plate appearances, along with a 15.2 BB% and a 19.4 K% in Triple-A this year.
On the other hand, it’s been a rough second tenure for Vogelbach. This season, he’s slashing .186/.278/.300 with one homer in 79 plate appearances for a 71 wRC+ or a -0.3 fWAR. This isn’t quite what you want from a player taking up at-bats as a designated hitter.
This also isn’t Vogelbach’s first time being designated for assignment by the Jays, as he had a brief (and I mean brief) tenure with Toronto in 2020 where had just five plate appearances in two games.
ROSTER MOVES: 🔹 LHP Robbie Ray & INF Jonathan Villar added to active roster 🔹 RHP Jacob Waguespack optioned & added to taxi squad 🔹 C Alejandro Kirk, OF Jonathan Davis & RHP Patrick Murphy added to taxi squad 🔹 RHP Sam Gaviglio & INFs Brandon Drury & Daniel Vogelbach DFA
It remains unknown where Barger will play now that he’s on the big league roster. In his first call up, the 24-year-old played in left field for the first time in his career. He also had limited experience in right field, but has played there more often this season.
Perhaps the Blue Jays will move George Springer to a full-time designated hitter role and allow Barger to play right field in his spot. Moreover, Barger has the ability to play third base (his natural position), second base, and shortstop, where he’s played 65.1 innings this season.
It’s clear that the Blue Jays are trying to shake up their offence. On top of designating Daniel Vogelbach for assignment, the Blue Jays DFA’ed long-time Blue Jay Cavan Biggio and traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers for relief prospect Braydon Fisher. To replace him, the Jays called up Spencer Horwitz, who has looked great through his first five games and could be a top-of-the-lineup hitter for the team moving forward.
