Charles McAdoo, welcome to the big leagues.
Very few MLB hitters can say they hit a home run in their pro debut, let alone a home run that sparked a six-run comeback victory, but that’s exactly what McAdoo did.
Baltimore Orioles starter Trevor Rogers was absolutely cruising against the Blue Jays on Friday night, two-hitting the Jays through the first six innings of his start. A Daulton Varsho triple and a Brandon Valenzuela double were the lone hits on the board for Toronto for the first two-thirds of the game.
But then the dam broke open. A single by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., followed by a home run from Kazuma Okamoto, put the Blue Jays on the board. Varsho punched a double to the outfield, and that’s when McAdoo made Blue Jays history.
With his round-tripper, McAdoo became only the sixth Blue Jays player to hit a home run in his MLB debut. It was a magical moment for the 26th-ranked prospect on the Blue Jays’ Top 30 list.
Connecting for a hit in your big league debut is rare, let alone a home run to bring your team within one run of the opponent.

The last Blue Jay to homer in their first MLB game was Davis Schneider, as most will remember his electric debut at Fenway Park on August 4, 2023. Schneider had two hits on the day, but his home run over the Green Monster is one that the Schneider family will always cherish.
Before that, Devon Travis homered in his first game as a rookie on April 6, 2015, against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium off reliever Chasen Shreve. As you can see in the video below, Travis ran around the bases at breakneck speed, probably because he couldn’t believe what he had just done.
The player who authored the most electric Blue Jays debut to date is still J.P. Arencibia, who made history on August 7, 2010, by hitting two home runs, a single, and a double in his very first game in the big leagues. On the first pitch of his MLB debut, Arencibia crushed one to left field at Rogers Centre.
Arencibia nearly hit for the cycle that afternoon against the Tampa Bay Rays, going 4 for 5 with three RBIs on the day. What’s even more impressive is the former Blue Jays catcher still holds the MLB record for total bases in a debut game with 11.
Then, we have to go all the way back to the opening season of the Blue Jays as a franchise in 1977, when a pair of fresh-faced rookies delivered their own history-making home runs. Second baseman Steve Staggs went deep on July 1, 1977, for his first home run.
Outfielder Al Woods came into the game as a pinch hitter on April 7, 1977, and did what every young baseball player can only dream of: hitting a ball into the heavens. In his very first professional at-bat, Woods cranked one over the Exhibition Stadium fence.
Luckily, it looks like McAdoo retrieved his ball from Camden Yards, as his teammates Braydon Fisher and Adam Macko also had noteworthy nights. Fisher collected his first save, and Macko made the first start of his MLB career. They were all instrumental in the Blue Jays’ 6-5 comeback over the Orioles.
