Don Mattingly has officially joined the Philadelphia Phillies coaching staff.
Although the reported signing happened in early December, the Phillies only made it official on Monday morning.
Mattingly joined the Toronto Blue Jays’ coaching staff in 2023, sort of as a mentor for manager John Schneider, who was about to embark on his first season at the helm of the team. In 2023, he served as a bench coach, then as the offensive co-ordinator in 2024. Before the 2025 season, Mattingly returned to just their bench coach, as the Jays missed the postseason in 2024.
Although he spent his entire playing career with the New York Yankees, Mattingly never won a World Series, as they won five seasons before Mattingly’s debut season and the season after his retirement. The closest he’s ever got to a World Series, as a player or coach/manager, was with the Blue Jays in 2025. Shortly after their loss, Mattingly stepped down from his role on the Blue Jays.
While the Jays didn’t find a direct replacement to their coaching staff, they added Drew Butera, Eric Duncan, and Cody Atkinson to their coaching staff for the 2026 season.
After retiring in 1995, Mattingly remained involved in the game. He joined the Yankees’ minor league system as a coach, before joining their big league coaching staff in 2004, lasting until 2007.
He departed for the Los Angeles Dodgers before the 2008 season, eventually becoming their manager in 2010. He spent six seasons at the helm of the Dodgers, then joined the Miami Marlins as their bench boss in 2016. That gig was his most recent managerial job, as he spent seven seasons with the Miami Marlins, winning the National League Manager of the Year in 2020.
Mattingly’s son, Preston, currently serves as the general manager. Last season, the Phillies finished with a 96-66 record, the second-best record in all of Major League Baseball. That means Mattingly still has a chance at winning a ring in some capacity.
