With the Blue Jays bullpen in shambles for most of the season, manager John Schneider relied heavily on right-hander Yimi García given all the injuries and subpar performances amongst the relief corps.
Considering the Jays’ struggles this season, García was one of the club’s better trade chips at the deadline and moved him a few days early before the final bell, sending him to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for outfielder Jonatan Clase and catcher Jacob Sharp.
Now with his new team, García has struggled to find the same form he found with Toronto through the first part of the campaign and now hits the injured list with right elbow inflammation – the second time this season the Dominican product has hit the shelf with an elbow-related injury.
He missed over a month with the Jays just before the trade deadline and was able to put a few outings under his belt before being traded to the AL West.

Since joining the Mariners, García has allowed seven hits and six earned runs through nine innings of work – allowing runs in four of his ten outings. García has also surrendered three home runs and walked four batters compared to seven strikeouts, with opposing hitters producing a .500 SLG and a .789 OPS through the sample size.
Velocity-wise, García’s fastball was still sitting above 95 MPH, which is normal for the veteran, but wasn’t producing the results and was likely battling through the injury which impacted his command.
García was one of the most trusted arms down in John Schneider’s bullpen before the trade, with the right-hander pitching to a 2.70 ERA through 30 innings of work.
The veteran was trusted with important duties with Erik Swanson, Tim Mayza, Jordan Romano, and Chad Green either hitting the IL or struggling on the mound and rose to the occasion – collecting five saves in six opportunities – while holding batters to a .154 average with a 12.6 K/9 and a 2.4 BB/9.

A free agent this offseason, there is no word on whether the elbow injury is more serious than previously indicated or if García will be back before the season ends. Recent reports indicate that he is in Arizona rehabbing and could be back in September, which is a good sign compared to long-term alternatives that have plagued the likes of Alek Manoah and Ricky Tiedemann this summer.
The Mariners currently sit 6.5 games back of an AL Wild Card spot and have been struggling as of late, leading to a change at the helm with Scott Servais being let go.
