Infielder Jordan Groshans, a former top prospect in Toronto’s minor league system, has signed a minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves.
This is the second time that Groshans has signed with a team to a minor league deal out of free agency. He signed with the Royals in November of 2024, playing 67 games between their Double-A and Triple-A affiliates last season. In those games, he slashed .284/.360/.362 with three home runs, 36 RBIs, 8 doubles and a triple.
He struggled through only eight games with Triple-A Omaha, but those games were scattered in two to three-game increments throughout the season. He hit .291 through the 59 games he played in Double-A Northwest Arkansas.
It’ll be an uphill battle for Groshans to play his way onto Atlanta’s 40-man roster, especially after the club made multiple infield additions this winter in UTIL Mauricio Dubon, INF Jorge Mateo, and SS Ha-Seong Kim, although Kim will miss the beginning of the season after having surgery on his right middle finger earlier this month. The Braves also signed SS Aaron Schunk, formerly of the Colorado Rockies, to a minor league deal after he elected free agency.
Groshans has built up quite a minor league resume during his seven professional seasons. He was drafted by the Blue Jays in the first round of the 2018 MLB Draft, spending parts of four years with the club, with his 2020 season being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He was dealt to the Miami Marlins before the 2022 trade deadline in exchange for relievers Zach Pop and Anthony Bass, as well as a PTBNL. That player turned out to be catching prospect Edward Duran, who is still with the organization and recently received an invite to spring training.
After playing 31 games with Miami’s Triple-A affiliate, Groshans made his major league debut with the Marlins, spending the final month and some change of the ’22 season in the majors. Those 17 games remain the only games he’s logged at the MLB level. Since then, he has played in the Yankees, Athletics, and Royals’ farm systems.
