Infielder Orelvis Martinez will attend spring training as a non-roster invitee with the Washington Nationals in 2026, per the club’s announcement on Friday.
The former Toronto Blue Jays top prospect, who agreed to a minor-league deal for ’26 with the Nats back in September, was one of three non-roster players — ones who aren’t already on the 40-man roster — to receive an invitation to major-league camp for next spring.
Martinez will compete for a job with the Nationals when camp opens in a few months, with the 24-year-old infielder aiming to return to the majors after spending all of last season at triple-A with the Buffalo Bisons.
The once-top-100-ranked prospect logged 99 games with Toronto’s triple-A affiliate in 2025, but struggled mightily at the plate, posting a troubling .176/.288/.348 slash line and striking out nearly one-third of the time. He also produced a measly 13 home runs — the second-fewest of his six professional campaigns — and 32 RBIs, leading to his career-worst 74 wRC+ (100 league average).
Such a disastrous offensive showing continued to slow the youngster’s development, which has rapidly declined since his 80-game PED suspension in 2024.
Given that Martinez would’ve been out of options next season, the Blue Jays decided to conduct a bit of early ’26 business by cutting ties with the right-handed-hitting slugger late last season. If he’s added to the Nationals’ 40-man roster at any point, he’d first need to clear waivers before the team could assign him to the minors.
Toronto may ultimately be forced to make a similar decision with Leo Jiménez next spring, considering the glove-first infielder will also be out of options.
