The 2019 season for the Toronto Blue Jays was a weird year, and one of the staples out of the bullpen has found a new home.
On Wednesday, it was reported that right-handed pitcher Derek Law has signed a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, with their Triple-A team, the Reno Aces, confirming it on Friday.
It’s not the first time Law was a part of an organization in the National League West, as he was drafted in the ninth round of the 2011 draft by the San Francisco Giants. In 2016, he made his debut for the Giants, posting a 2.13 ERA and 2.53 FIP in 55 innings. He couldn’t find that same success in either 2017 or 2018, and early into the 2019 season, Law was traded.
On April 2nd, 2019, the rebuilding Jays sent fan-favourite Kevin Pillar to the Giants in exchange for Law, Alen Hanson, and Juan De Paula. The latter never pitched in the big leagues, while Hanson had a cup of tea after the trade. Law, on the other hand, authored a 4.90 ERA and 4.85 FIP in 60.2 innings pitched, picking up five saves and eight holds.
At the end of the season, Law was a non-tender, and because of the global pandemic, Law didn’t pitch again until the 2021 season. The right-handed pitcher only appeared in nine games with the Minnesota Twins in 2021, then 17 games in 2022 with the Detroit Tigers and Cincinnati Reds.
It was with the Reds where Law had his first good season since his rookie year, posting a 3.60 ERA and 4.62 FIP in 55 innings pitched, appearing in a total of 54 games. Law continued that success in 2024, finishing the season with a 2.60 ERA and 3.32 FIP in 90 innings pitched.
Unfortunately, Law missed the entirety of the 2025 season due to a flexor tendon surgery, hence the minor league deal. Law will join former Blue Jays Gabriel Moreno and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the Diamondbacks organization, although Gurriel Jr. is likely out for the entire 2026 season.
