Free agent and ex-Phillies outfielder Max Kepler has found himself in hot water this winter.
The left-handed hitting veteran has been suspended for 80 games after testing positive for the banned substance Epitrenbolone, which violates Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. With this suspension, should Kepler sign with a team this offseason, he will miss the first 80 games as well as be ineligible for the postseason.
Should Kepler go unsigned this winter, the suspension does not start on Opening Day; it begins when he signs with a new team, should that happen post Opening Day.
Kepler is coming off a one-year, $10 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies that saw the 32-year-old post a .216/.300/.391 slash line across 127 games and 417 at-bats. With the Phillies, he amassed a .691 OPS and belted 18 home runs. He featured in four games for the Phillies this past October in the NLDS, going 2 for 12 at the plate with one double and one triple, while also stealing one base with three walks.
Before joining the Phillies, Kepler spent 10 seasons with the Minnesota Twins, the same organization that signed him out of Germany when he was 16. Across 1072 games in the AL Central, Kepler hit to a .237/.318/.429 slash line with 205 doubles, 161 home runs, a .746 OPS and a 20.5 bWAR. His best season came in 2019, when he posted a 4.0 bWAR while hitting a career high 36 home runs and 90 RBIs to the tune of a .855 OPS.
Kepler has yet to comment on the suspension.
