The Toronto Blue Jays had a very successful Spring Training Sunday.
Half the squad went to Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota to face the Orioles, while the rest stayed home at TD Ballpark to face the Detroit Tigers. With a good chunk of the roster away at the World Baseball Classic, the Jays called upon numerous prospects and various arms to get through both games.
When the dust settled, it was the Jays who were victorious on both fronts. They blanked the Orioles 1-0 on the road and also held the Tigers off the scoreboard in front of the home crowd, winning 5-0.
Blue Jays vs. Orioles
Cody Ponce took the hill for Toronto, going three innings against an Orioles squad that featured some big league bats in Colton Cowser, Taylor Ward, Pete Alonso, Samuel Basallo, and known Blue Jay killer Ryan Mountcastle. It was Ponce who won the day, tossing three scoreless innings with zero hits allowed with one strikeout.
The remaining pitchers – Mason Fluharty, Braydon Fisher, Michael Plassmeyer, Javen Coleman, and Hayden Juenger – followed Ponce’s strong outing, allowing just five hits and one walk while striking out seven, collectively. Juenger would earn the save.
Just as impressive was the Orioles’ pitching staff, with manager Craig Albernaz sending nine different arms to the mound. The Jays’ bats were limited to just seven hits and one run, but won the walk game, generating five free passes on the day. This lineup was heavily influenced by prospects, with Myles Straw, Jesus Sanchez, and Eloy Jimenez being the lone position players to suit up who had big league experience under their belt.
The lone Jays run came in the third inning, with Arjun Nimmala getting on base via a single that didn’t leave the infield. Orioles pitcher Jackson Kowar would get the next batters out, but a stolen base and a wild pitch saw Nimmala advance to third base with Sanchez now up at the plate.
The left-handed bat worked to a 2-2 count before turning on an inside changeup, sending the ball through the right side for a single, scoring Nimmala and putting the Jays on the scoreboard.
Also finding the hit column were Straw, Brandon Valenzuela (double), Rafael Lantigua, Jay Harry, and Nimmala for a second time.
Blue Jays vs. Tigers
Back at TD Ballpark, Kevin Gausman and the rest of the Blue Jays were facing the Tigers. Toronto kept a lot of big league talent for this contest, including George Springer, Nathan Lukes, Davis Schneider, Daulton Varsho, Addison Barger, Tyler Heineman, and Jonatan Clase, although a lot of prospects featured in the game later in the day.
On the mound, Gausman went 3 1/3 innings and allowed three hits while walking zero and striking out three, posting a 65.4% strike rate while sitting in the 91-93 MPH range with his fastball. Angel Bastardo, Tyler Rogers, Jesse Hahn, Spencer Miles, and Tanner Andrews followed Gausman, with the crew allowing just four hits and two walks the rest of the way while chipping in with five punchouts. Miles allowed two hits against the Tigers but struck out the side to get through the frame, while Bastardo allowed both walks through his 1 2/3 innings of work.
At the plate, Barger got the Jays on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Facing left-hander Bryan Sammons, Barger worked to a full count and pounced on an 89 MPH fastball, sending it 410 feet the opposite way that ended up hitting the scoreboard just beyond the left-centre field wall.

The Blue Jays would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the third inning, with Barger singling to centre field with the bases loaded, scoring Springer and Lukes to make it 3-0. Heineman would single up the middle to score Varsho from third base, making it 4-0. Toronto would tack on their final run in the bottom of the fourth inning, with Jonatan Clase starting the frame with a leadoff walk before a double off the bat of Josh Kasevich scored Clase.
Barger led the Jays’ bats with his two hits and three RBIs, while Clase, Heineman, Lukes, Kasevich, and Josh Rivera also found the hit column.
The Blue Jays will be off tomorrow but back in action on Tuesday when they welcome the Atlanta Braves for an afternoon contest at TD Ballpark.
