Puerto Rican GM Carlos Beltran said Jose Berrios will not be participating at the WBC (insurance was not approved) “There’s no doubt he could’ve helped us… the process has been frustrating… we have to move forward.”

Team Puerto Rico continues to deal with insurance issues at the World Baseball Classic.
After manager Yadier Molina advised the media last night that right-hander Jose Berrios would be joining the squad for the quarterfinal matchup after getting his insurance approved, general manager Carlos Beltran announced shortly after that Berrios will be staying stateside after receiving word that his insurance was denied.
“There’s no doubt he could’ve helped us,” Beltran said to the media. “The process has been frustrating… we have to move forward… We feel bad because in some way or another, we know the intention that he (Jose Berrios) had was to be with us, helping us out. He worked really hard here getting ready. He’s in a program… pitching 70 pitches, and he feels healthy.”
After initially telling the media about Berrios’s upcoming availability, Molina spoke on the disappointing news, “We know that we have a very young team… they’re good, and they’re talented. They’re going to give everything to Puerto Rico… to have elite players that can’t participate in their own tournaments, it is frustrating for us.”
Berrios is no stranger to representing his home nation, appearing for the squad in 2013, 2017, and 2023 at the World Baseball Classic. The right-hander is healthy after a disappointing 2025 season, posting a 4.17 ERA and a 4.65 FIP across 166 innings that saw him land first in the bullpen and then on the IL to cap off the year, the first time Berrios has landed on the sidelines. The Jays were reportedly open to dealing Berrios this winter but found no trade suitors.
This spring, Berrios has made three starts and allowed eight hits, four runs, and four walks across 10 2/3 innings while striking out seven batters.
Even without Berrios and the likes of Carlos Correa, Francisco Lindor, and Javier Baez because of insurance issues and Baez’s suspension, Puerto Rico is still moving on to the next stage. The squad also boasts one of the top team ERAs in the tournament, allowing just five earned runs and 19 hits across 37 innings, posting a 1.22 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP.
