The Toronto Blue Jays continued their winning ways in Colorado, with the bats torching the Rockies’ pitching staff for seven extra-base hits on their way to a 10-4 drubbing. With this win, the Jays have put up 25 runs in just two games at Coors Field.
On the pitching side, the Jays had Jose Berrios make the start, and the right-hander fell into some trouble early. A double to Ezequiel Tovar and a home run to Hunter Goodman had Colorado ahead in the first inning, with the Jays unable to answer until the third inning.
The Puerto Rican product would keep the Rockies at bay until the bottom of the sixth inning before they started to string together some hits. A couple singles, a hit by pitch, and a rare fielding error from Daulton Varsho plated two more runs, giving the Rockies four runs on the day. Yariel Rodriguez would enter the game and escape the jam by getting Thairo Estrada to ground into a double play.
Berrios’s final line would be 5 1/3 innings with seven hits, four runs (three earned), one walk, and five home runs. Rodriguez, Louie Varland and Tommy Nance would follow, with the group allowing just two hits (both to Rodriguez) and two walks while Varland struck out two in his inning of work.
At the plate, it was Nathan Lukes who got the party started for Toronto. He almost hit a leadoff home run in the first inning, but centre fielder Brenton Doyle was able to make the leaping grab at the wall. He would get his revenge in the top of the third, sending a low and inside fastball over the right centre field wall at 399 feet.
Daulton Varsho would get in on the action in the top of the fourth, with the centre fielder collecting his tenth home run of the season to help put the Blue Jays ahead by a score of 3-2. Varsho connected on a middle-middle fastball to send it 404 feet over the right field wall, plating two runs. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Addison Barger also homered in the game, collecting solo shots in the top of the sixth inning to make it 5-2 Toronto. However, it was Varsho again who stole the show, sending another middle-middle fastball over the right field wall to score himself and Alejandro Kirk, making it 7-2. Varho’s second shot of the night went 467 feet, the longest home run this season and eclipsing the mark he set last night against the Rockies’ pitching staff.
With the game firmly on their side heading into the top of the ninth, Lukes and Bichette opened the inning with singles, and Guerrero brought them home with a double of his own, making it 8-4. Varsho would add a double to his ledger, plating two more runs to give the Jays double digits on the evening and the eventual 10-4 score.
It was a successful day at the hitter-friendly park, with only Ernie Clement and Ty France failing to find the hit column. Varsho led the way with his three extra-base hits and six RBIs, while Lukes, Guerrero, and Barger also added to the RBI total. Lukes, Bichette, Guerrero, Varsho, and Alejandro Kirk all had multi-hit days.
Outfielder Joey Loperfido would be removed from the game in the top of the sixth inning after taking a 98.2 MPH fastball to the knee during his at-bat. Myles Straw would enter the game, and X-rays on Loperfido’s knee were negative, with the outfielder avoiding any serious injuries for the time being.
Toronto goes for the sweep later today with Colorado products Kevin Gausman and Kyle Freeland taking the mound for the Jays and Rockies, respectively.
