The Toronto Blue Jays dropped their latest series to the Kansas City Royals this past weekend, but the club bounced back last night against the Colorado Rockies and found the same bats that have made them one of the hottest teams in the league since the All-Star Break. When the dust settled, it was Toronto who came out on top with a 15-1 victory.
Toronto got the party started with Nathan Lukes driving the first pitch he saw for a double to centre field. Bo Bichette brought him home shortly after with a ground ball through the right side, giving the Jays a quick 1-0 lead.
The Jays tagged starter Tanner Gordon for another run in the second inning thanks to an Ernie Clement single, a wild pitch, and a single from Davis Schneider to bring his roommate in. The floodgates opened in the third inning, as the Jays would add seven more runs to widen the gap.
Daulton Varsho would launch a Gordon changeup low in the zone over the right field wall, leaving the bat at a 106.9 MPH and landing 451 feet in the crowd. That homer was his first since returning from the IL and gave the Jays a 5-0 lead over the Rockies, with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Addison Barger both scoring as well. Clement would triple to right field, and Joey Loperfido would bring him home on a single to centre field that landed in front of Brenton Doyle. Schneider would send a ball to left field to score Loperfido, but the Jays infielder would be tossed out trying to stretch a double into a triple on the play. That run would end Gordon’s night.
Left-hander Ryan Rolison would come in and immediately walk Lukes to bring Bichette to the plate. The Jays’ DH last night would drive an inside curveball 413 feet over the wall, giving Toronto two more runs to extend their lead to 9-0 before the Rockies came up to the plate in the bottom of the third.
Toronto would be held off the scoreboard until the top of the seventh, with Lukes driving in a run on a single up the middle to make it 10-1. However, Bichette would steal the spotlight shortly after, demolishing an inside fastball from reliever Carson Palmquist over the left-centre field wall to tack on three more runs, making it 13-1. His second homer of the day would make it a career-high six RBIs on the night for the right-handed bat. Varsho would add another run via a single up the middle, scoring Barger from second base.
Ty France would collect a hit in the top of the ninth and pokes from Myles Straw and Clement would bring him home, making it 15-1.
On the mound, Eric Lauer kept the Rockies out of the runs column until the bottom of the fifth inning, with a double from Tyler Freeman and a single from Ezequiel Tovar that landed in front of Loperfido in left field, scoring Freeman from second base. At the time, Lauer had allowed six hits and one walk while striking out four.
The left-hander would come back out for the sixth inning with 84 pitches on the ledger and pitched a clean frame, adding one more hit to his line and finishing the day with a 66.0% strike rate and 13 whiffs. Braydon Fisher would be tasked with the seventh inning, striking out three while allowing one hit, and Mason Fluharty would clean up the last two innings, striking out one batter with zero runs allowed.

Toronto would put 20+ hits on an opponent for the 40th time in franchise history, doing so by the seventh inning. Lukes, Bichette, Barger, Kirk, Varsho, Clement, Loperfido, and Schnieder would all have multi-hit days while Guerrero went 1 for 5 in the batter’s box before being replaced by France to start the bottom of the seventh. Lukes went 3 for 4, Bichette went 3 for 6, Clement went 5 for 6, and Loperfido went 3 for 6 on the night. Except for Tyler Heineman, who replaced Kirk late in the game and had just one at-bat, each Jays batter found a way to reach base, all via a hit.
The Toronto Blue Jays took advantage of the hitter friendly confines and will look to add another win tonight against the scuffling NL West club.
