The Toronto Blue Jays have started a new home winning streak after yesterday’s loss, beating the Yankees 8-4 to secure both the series and season series win over their divisional rival.
Right-hander Chris Bassitt grinded through 7 1/3 innings of work, allowing four runs (three earned) with zero walks and eight strikeouts. He allowed just three hits on the evening, all of which were home runs.
Jasson Dominguez launched a solo shot in the top of the second inning, and Anthony Volpe added another in the top of the fifth inning. A fielding error by Vladimir Guerrero to open up the top of the sixth put Trent Grisham on base, and Aaron Judge launched a homer of his own, plating two.
Bassitt would finish the evening with seven whiffs and saw his ERA finish at 3.88.
Left-hander Justin Bruihl would follow to finish the eighth inning, and despite allowing two singles, he would get Judge to ground out into a double play to end the frame. Yariel Rodriguez would come in to shut the Bronx Bombers down in the top half of the ninth, getting two lineouts and a flyout to secure the win.
The Blue Jays’ bats took full advantage of the Yankees’ lacklustre defense this evening.
George Springer and Guerrero got the Jays on the board in the bottom of the fourth, with the veteran bat poking a single to centre field before Guerrero launched a line drive to left field for a double to plate Springer. A walk to Alejandro Kirk and back-to-back singles for Addison Barger and Ernie Clement plated Guerrero, giving the Jays an early 2-1 lead.
Tied at two apiece, Davis Schneider would get on base via a walk in the bottom of the fifth and stole second shortly after. A walk to Springer put runners on first and second before a wild pitch from starter Max Fried moved both into scoring position. Guerrero would produce a chopper up the third base line, and a throwing error from Fried to home plate would see both Schneider and Springer score on the play.
With the score tied again at four, Ernie Clement got the bottom of the sixth started with a triple, which in reality was a shot to right field that Cody Bellinger lost in the lights. Myles Straw laced a double down the left field line to plate Clement, ending Fried’s night as well. Another fielding error, this time by first baseman Ben Rice, saw Will Wagner reach base and Straw score on the play, making it 6-4 Toronto. An inning later, Bo Bichette would launch a low sweeper just over the left field wall, plating two more runs to give the Jays an 8-4 lead. This would be all the club would need, capitalizing on the Yankees’ four errors.
For the Yanks, Fried went 5 1/3 innings and allowed six hits and four earned runs (six total) on 102 pitches, striking out three compared to three walks. He earns the loss.
With this win, the Toronto Blue Jays have now tied the Houston Astros for the best record in the AL East and have officially won the season series over their divisional rival. Tomorrow, the Jays will head to Comerica Park to face the Detroit Tigers, who currently rank first in the AL Central.
