Who doesn’t love high-scoring games?
On Tuesday evening, the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 10-9 to win their fifth consecutive series and move to a season-high seven games above. 500. Let’s take a look at what happened!
In the top of the first, Bo Bichette and Alejandro Kirk reached on singles to put two runners on. After George Springer popped out, up stepped Andres Gimenez, who hit his fourth run of the season to give the Jays an early 3-0 lead.

Alan Roden drove in another run in the top of the fourth with an RBI single, giving the Jays a 4-0 lead. However, the Cardinals tied it in the bottom of the fourth as Nolan Arenado hit an RBI single and Nolan Gorman hit a three-run home run.
It didn’t take the Jays long to restore their lead, as Addison Barger hit his 13th double of the season to cash in run number five, followed by Springer’s sacrifice fly to make it a 6-4 game. Kirk continued his hot streak, hitting a two-run home run, his second in as many days, to give the Jays an 8-4 lead.

Arenado got the Cardinals to within one thanks to a two-run home run, but the Jays restored their four-run lead as Gimenez hit an RBI single and Kirk scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-6. They needed those runs, as Wilson Contreras hit a three-run home run, his eighth home run of the season, in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 10-9 game.
Takeaways…
With the win, the Blue Jays move to 37-30 for the season. They’re now seven games above .500, a season-best. In fact, this is the most games above .500 they’ve been since the 2023 season. The New York Yankees also won their game, meaning the Jays remain four games behind the division lead.
Regardless of whether they win the series finale on Wednesday, the Blue Jays have won their fifth consecutive series, defeating the Texas Rangers, Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, Minnesota Twins, and now the Cardinals. In their last 15 games, the Blue Jays are 12-3, and since May 8, they have a 21-10 record.
A big reason for their season turnaround is thanks to the Blue Jays’ offence coming alive. That continued on Tuesday, as they finished with 16 hits, with Andres Gimenez and Alejandro Kirk each hitting a home run. Kirk and Bo Bichette each had three-hit games, while Alan Roden, Gimenez, George Springer, and Addison Barger had two-hit games. They were able to score 10 runs without Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the lineup.
However, their pitching in this game wasn’t particularly great, except for Chris Bassitt. He made the start, giving up four earned runs in the bottom of the fourth. In the end, Bassitt gave the Jays four innings, saving them for tomorrow’s game.
Mason Fluharty gave up an earned run in his two-thirds of an inning pitched to bring his season ERA to 3.81. Chad Green had an incredibly rough game, being tagged for three earned runs in his inning of work. Jeff Hoffman threw two pitches, one was a three-run shot, the other was a ground ball to end the game for his 17th save of the season.
The Jays have a chance to sweep their fifth series of the season on Wednesday at 2:15 PM ET. Last season, the Jays swept five series, including one against the Cardinals, ironically for their fifth sweep of the season. It’s undecided whether Eric Lauer or Spencer Turnbull will start.
