The Toronto Blue Jays have been juggling pitchers all season long, and one move the club made was promoting right-hander Hayden Juenger to the big league staff. The right-hander made two appearances for Toronto before being DFA’d in late June, with the club needing his roster spot.
The front office ended up moving Juenger to the Athletics, and in return, the club acquired catcher Owen Carapellotti.
After four years at Georgetown, Carapellotti signed a MiLB deal with the A’s last summer but didn’t make his pro debut until this season. Injuries limited him to just 20 games with the A’s, and he was on the IL when Toronto acquired him. Before the trade, Carapellotti posted a .267/.389/.627 slash line with three doubles and eight home runs across 75 at-bats. This included a 1.016 OPS and 15 walks.
Carapellotti returned to the diamond on July 7th with the FCL Jays and on July 21st, was moved to Dunedin, where he is currently playing. While he didn’t post the best numbers in Rookie Ball, Carapellotti has really found a groove with the Jays squad in the Florida State League.
Across 14 games and 48 at-bats, Carapellotti continues to put the barrel to the baseball. He boasts a .271/.364/.625 slash line with two doubles and five home runs during that span. Of his 13 hits, seven have been for extra bases, and he’s also tacked on nine RBIs with six walks mixed in between.
On August 19th, Carapellotti launched two home runs with three RBIs, and launched a home run against Tampa on August 16th as well. The left-handed hitting power bat is also riding a six-game hit streak dating back to early August, and has three multi-hit games during that span. Behind the plate, Carapellotti has posted a .985 fielding percentage and thrown out 4 of 21 base stealers.
Carapellotti is on the older side in Single-A at 23 years old, but there’s a strong chance he finishes the year in Vancouver for a cup of coffee at High-A. If not, he’s primed to start the year in the Northwest League for an organization that is hungry for some prospects to emerge from behind the plate.
