It’s been a busy off-season for the Los Angeles Angels.
Making another addition on the pitching front, the Halos reportedly signed veteran reliever Kirby Yates to a one-year deal on Tuesday, per Ari Alexander of Boston 7 News. The contract will be worth $5 million next season, as the New York Post’s Jon Heyman added.
The 38-year-old Yates will now remain in Los Angeles after spending last season with the Dodgers, and will attempt to improve upon the disappointing 5.23 ERA and 4.76 FIP he posted across 50 appearances (41.1 innings). It’ll be his second stint with the Angels following his brief stint with the franchise in 2017.
This time around, though, Yates will be paired with one of his former pitching coaches, Mike Maddux, who also served in that role during his excellent 2024 performance. In 61 appearances, the right-hander dazzled to a career-best 1.17 ERA and 2.50 FIP, accounting for a 24.1 per cent strikeout-minus-walk rate (K-BB%) and 1.9 fWAR — the highest of his career.
Yates, whose HR/9 jumped from 0.44 to 1.96 in 2025, will hope to recapture some of that All-Star magic at the back end of the Angels’ retooled bullpen. They’ve also brought in Drew Pomeranz and Jordan Romano in free agency this winter, as well as a few starting rotation additions with Alek Manoah and Grayson Rodriguez (via trade from Baltimore).
This signing also brings another former Blue Jay into the fold, joining Yusei Kikuchi, Romano, Manoah and Travis d’Arnaud. Former skipper and now bench coach John Gibbons and infield coach Ryan Goins (five seasons in Toronto as a player from 2013-17) also join them.
Yates signed with the Blue Jays ahead of the 2021 season, but never threw a single pitch after undergoing Tommy John surgery and missing the entire campaign. He returned towards the end of the ’22 season, logging nine appearances with the Atlanta Braves.
This upcoming season could prove to be the final one of Yates’ career.
