The Toronto Blue Jays’ pitching depth was thrown another curveball this week.
Blue Jays prospect Ricky Tiedemann, the club’s #4 top prospect per MLB Pipeline, felt some elbow soreness after pitching in a side session last week, per Mitch Bannon (The Athletic) and Keegan Matheson (MLB.com). Tiedemann went for an MRI, and the results showed no further structural issues, but he will be on the shelf for a week before potentially resuming throwing again.
Tiedemann has had his fair share of injuries since being drafted in 2021.
Since being selected in the third round, the left-hander has 140 pro innings under his belt across three seasons, and missed all of 2025 after undergoing Tommy John surgery the year before.
Tiedemann made his Jays farm system debut in 2022, making 18 starts to the tune of 78 2/3 innings across three levels. He followed that with 15 starts in 2023, most of which came in Double-A New Hampshire, but included one start in Triple-A Buffalo to cap off the year.
The California product made eight starts in 2024 before landing on the IL, putting up a 6.00 ERA with the Bisons across nine innings. He went under the knife in mid-summer and missed all of 2025 as he worked back from Tommy John.
Tiedemann likely wasn’t going to crack the Opening Day roster for Toronto heading into 2026, but he was on the shortlist of names that could be called upon this season if injuries started to hamper the big league rotation. Expectations were that Tiedemann would return to Buffalo to get some more innings under his belt and could work himself into a late-season bullpen role with the Jays this year.
The news appears to be on the positive side, and hopefully, some rest from throwing will be all that’s needed for Tiedemann to get back on track to taking the mound this spring before the regular season comes around.
