Perhaps a third time will be the charm for Eloy Jiménez, who’s reportedly returning to the Toronto Blue Jays.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Mitch Bannon, Jiménez has agreed to a minor-league deal with the Blue Jays and will soon report to Triple-A Buffalo. The 29-year-old slugger elected free agency at the start of May after he was designated for assignment by the organization and ultimately cleared waivers.
This is now the third minor-league contract that Jiménez has signed since initially joining the Blue Jays last September. He played just six games with Triple-A Buffalo before the 2025 season concluded. But instead of heading elsewhere last off-season, he decided to return and had an opportunity to break camp with the big-league club as a non-roster invitee in spring training.
Jiménez’s efforts, while impressive, ultimately came up short, and he opened this season back in Buffalo. It wasn’t long before an opening arose, though, creating a pathway back to the majors for the first time since 2024.
The results didn’t end up translating into much success, as the right-handed DH went 9-for-31 (.290) without recording an extra-base hit in 12 games with Toronto before he was DFA’d. He did have a trio of walks in that minuscule sample size. Having said that, he wasn’t brought in for plate discipline. They needed power from him — but instead received a power outage.
Now that Jiménez is due to rejoin the system, he’ll have an opportunity to reignite his bat with the Bisons, where he’ll mostly occupy first base and DH reps, but may also occasionally shift to an outfield corner.
