Serving as one of the most speculated names on the trade block for several months, two-time All-Star starting pitcher Freddy Peralta has reportedly been traded to the New York Mets from the Milwaukee Brewers.
Peralta is just the latest large-scale acquisition that the Mets have made in the past week. After striking out on Kyle Tucker, the Mets signed Bo Bichette to a three-year, $126 million deal last Thursday, and they also acquired Luis Robert Jr. in a trade with the Chicago White Sox late on Tuesday night.
Peralta will conclude a very successful eight-year tenure with the Brewers with a 70-42 record, a 3.59 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and an 11.1 K/9 over 211 total appearances. He finished 5th in National League Cy Young voting last season after posting a 2.70 ERA and a NL-best 17 wins over 33 starts.
For a rotation that ranked 18th in the league in starting pitcher ERA (4.13), the addition of Peralta gives New York’s starting rotation a much better outlook heading into 2026. He will join Nolan McLean, David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Sean Manaea, Kodai Senga, and Jonah Tong as starting pitching candidates for the Opening Day roster.
Along with Peralta, the Brewers will also be sending SP/RP Tobias Myers to New York. After spending the majority of 2024 as a starter, Myers worked in a hybrid role last year, bouncing between Triple-A and the big league club. He pitched to a 3.55 ERA and 1.36 WHIP over 50 2/3 innings during the regular season and made one appearance during the NLCS against the Dodgers.
The Mets will send a pair of top prospects in INF/OF Jett Williams and SP Brandon Sproat to the Brewers.
Williams was selected by the Mets in the first round of the 2022 MLB Draft, and after missing most of the ’24 season recovering from wrist surgery, he was able to play in a total of 130 games last year between Double-A and Triple-A. Between those two levels, he showcased one of his best attributes with 34 stolen bases, with all but two of them coming at Double-A Binghamton (7th in the Eastern League).
Despite taking a little bit of a step back in his slash line after his promotion to Triple-A Syracuse, Williams still ended the season at a .261/.363/.465 mark between both levels with 17 home runs, 52 RBIs, 34 doubles and 7 triples.
Sproat made his major league debut with the Mets last September, allowing 11 earned runs, 17 strikeouts, and seven walks over 20 and 2/3 innings. He features a sinker that averaged at 95.7 mph with a mix of secondary pitches, including a sweeper that generated a 34.6% whiff rate last year.
Although his first stint in the bigs wasn’t the prettiest, he still boasted some of the highest fastball velocities on New York’s pitching staff, and he was in position to compete for a starting spot on this year’s staff, a position he will likely retain heading into Milwaukee’s spring training.
