The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired some help for their fatigued bullpen.

Former Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.

Diamondbacks MLB.com beat writer Steve Gilbert was first to report the news.

Sewald, 36, has 24 saves for the Diamondbacks this season, but also holds a 6.23 ERA and has struggled recently. The right-hander had a 12.00 ERA and allowed six home runs over his last 12 outings dating back to the start of July. He was eventually removed from the closer role before being designated for assignment.

Initially, Sewald started the season well, pitching to a 3.18 ERA with 32 strikeouts and eight walks over his first 28.1 innings. His issue has been dangerous contact in the air, as he ranks in the bottom 1 % of MLB pitchers in both ground-ball rate and barrel rate.

However, Sewald’s strikeout-minus-walk rate — one of the best tools for evaluating relievers as it isolates for what they have complete control over — comes in at a promising 87th percentile mark (21.5 %).

Toronto is nearing the end of a stretch of 30 games in 31 days and 17 straight that has worn out its bullpen. Blue Jays relievers have covered at least three innings in each of the last 12 games, and pitched between four and six innings in seven of the last eight days. Four extra-inning affairs across three different cities over five days punctuated the gruelling schedule.

Sewald could now supplement that weary group with a veteran bullpen arm that also has the upside of a leverage reliever.

Alongside the Sewald acquisition, the Blue Jays recalled right-hander Jake Bloss and placed him on the 60-day injured list. Bloss suffered a teres major injury in mid-July and hasn’t pitched since July 11.

Through 11 outings this season, across four minor league levels, Bloss is 0-4 with a 6.18 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.
