The Toronto Blue Jays were dealt a tough blow this morning.
After leaving yesterday afternoon’s game after taking a foul tip off his glove, Blue Jays backstop Alejandro Kirk has been diagnosed with a fractured left thumb and will be hitting the IL. The organization recalled Brandon Valenzuela from Triple-A as a corresponding move.
Kirk has been one of the most important players on the Jays’ roster in recent years, with his ability to work behind the plate and put forward the clutch hits making him a fan favourite in Toronto. The Jays signed the backstop to a five-year extension before the 2025 season.
The Jays catcher has been off to a slow start at the plate this campaign, collecting just three hits through 20 at-bats. Of the three hits, two have been for extra bases, one of which was a towering drive over the left field wall against the Athletics last weekend, while the other was a double down the left field corner that scored Addison Barger in yesterday’s contest.
Behind the plate, Kirk continues to shine, even in the age of ABS. He sits with a +1 rating for catcher framing runs and owns a 56.9% shadow strike rate to begin the year. His blocks above average rank in the 100th percentile, and his framing is just behind in the 98th percentile.
Taking his place on the roster will be Brandon Valenzuela, who was acquired by the Jays at the 2025 trade deadline from the Padres with infielder Will Wagner heading the other way.
The switch-hitting catcher has yet to make his big league debut and has spent the past seven seasons in the Padres’ farm system before the trade last summer. The Mexican product impressed this spring, amassing a .304/.370/.478 slash line through 23 at-bats and 11 games. So far with the Bisons in 2026, Valenzuela has three hits through 15 at-bats, including a home run, with four RBIs and two walks.
The expectation will be that Heineman will do most of the work behind the plate with Kirk on the sidelines, but Valenzuela should see a good amount of playing time over the coming weeks while Kirk is on the mend. The recovery time will all depend on the placement/severity of the fracture on his thumb, but considering it is on Kirk’s glove hand, the Blue Jays will likely take their time with their All-Star catcher while he is recovering.
