The Toronto Blue Jays are starting to get healthy.
Ahead of Saturday afternoon’s game, the Blue Jays announced that they have activated Addison Barger off the injured list, optioning Yohendrick Piñango to make room on the 26-man roster. Given Piñango’s hot bat, that move was a little confounding, but at least they got a genuine power threat in Barger back in the lineup.
Barger hasn’t played a game since April 4th, when he was injured in Chicago trying to leg out a ground ball in the infield with the bases loaded. The day prior, Alejandro Kirk suffered a fractured thumb and has yet to return, though he is progressing. Add the fact in the series before the road trip to face the White Sox, the Jays lost Cody Ponce due to a knee injury, and you can see why they’ve began the season 17-21.
The Blue Jays faced the Angels starter, Jack Kochanowicz, earlier this season. On April 21st, the 6’7″, right-handed pitcher threw five and two-thirds innings with an earned run allowed, two walks, and a strikeout. It was one of his better starts of the season, but his lone strikeout was the fewest in any of his seven starts. Patience is key.
As for the Blue Jays, Trey Yesavage will make his third start of the season. The 22-year-old doesn’t look as dominant as he had at points last season, but he has a 0.96 ERA and 2.17 FIP in nine and one-third innings pitched, getting out of trouble numerous times. Last time out against the Minnesota Twins on May 3rd, Yesavage allowed one earned run, three walked, and struck out six over four innings of work.
With a righty on the mound for the Angels, the Blue Jays have plenty of left-handed batters in the lineup. Barger returns to the two-hole, Jesús Sánchez hits fifth, Daulton Varsho sixth, and Andrés Giménez eighth. George Springer leads off, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hits third, Kazuma Okamoto cleans up, and Ernie Clement hits seventh. Catching Yesavage will be Brandon Valenzuela, who bats ninth.
