Yet another Toronto Blue Jays player has hit the mend, this time it’s Addison Barger’s turn.
Prior to Tuesday’s contest against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the club officially placed Barger on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to April 6, with a left ankle sprain. As a corresponding move, they recalled infielder Tyler Fitzgerald from Triple-A Buffalo, marking his arrival just a few days after he was acquired via trade from the San Francisco Giants over the weekend.
Additionally, the Blue Jays also recalled left-hander Patrick Corbin from Single-A Dunedin. To make room, fellow lefty Josh Fleming has been designated for assignment only one day after making his debut with the team.
Barger now joins a long list of names currently on the IL, which includes Alejandro Kirk and Anthony Santander on the position-player side, as well as José Berríos, Shane Bieber, Trey Yesavage, Cody Ponce, Bowden Francis and Yimi García on the pitching side.
The 26-year-old slugger departed Sunday’s series finale versus the Chicago White Sox after attempting to beat out a throw at first base, with the club later revealing he left the contest due to soreness in both ankles. This likely isn’t a major issue, though it’ll now keep him sidelined until at least the middle of April.
It had been a disappointing start to the 2026 season for Barger, who has just one hit in 19 at-bats (.053) on the young campaign, striking out six times and earning three walks in eight games.
Fitzgerald will be mostly utilized as an infielder, manager John Schneider said pre-game on Monday. However, the former Giant also features experience at all three outfield positions, and he’ll be an option off the bench against the Dodgers on Tuesday.
Corbin, signed to a one-year deal worth $1 million by the Blue Jays last week, is scheduled to start against the Minnesota Twins on Friday, filling Cody Ponce’s vacated rotation spot now that he’ll officially undergo surgery to repair the sprained ACL in his right knee.
The 36-year-old southpaw impressed over five innings of one run (unearned) ball in his organizational debut with Single-A Dunedin last Saturday, allowing just four hits and one walk while punching out nine — albeit versus teenage hitters. The biggest takeaway was that he threw 74 pitches (54 strikes), which he should be able to build on further during his next start.
Last season, Corbin logged 31 games (30 starts) with the Texas Rangers, pitching to a respectable 4.40 ERA and 4.25 FIP across 155.1 innings, producing a 12.1 per cent strikeout-minus-walk rate — the highest he’s recorded in half a decade — and nearly serving as a two-win pitcher per fWAR.
