It’s been a busy day of transactions for the Toronto Blue Jays.
A few hours after placing All-Star catcher Alejandro Kirk on the 10-day IL, the organization announced a mid-game trade with the San Francisco Giants on Saturday, acquiring veteran infielder Tyler Fitzgerald for cash considerations.
The Blue Jays then immediately optioned Fitzgerald, who’s in his final option year, to Triple-A Buffalo. The 28-year-old had been designated for assignment by the Giants earlier this week after beginning this season with their Triple-A affiliate.
Fitzgerald has only played three games this season, going hitless across his first 14 plate appearances with five strikeouts and only one walk. He’ll now join the Bisons’ infield, where he’ll add an extra layer of depth following the departure of Leo Jiménez, who was traded to the Miami Marlins after the out-of-options infielder failed to make the Blue Jays’ roster out of spring training.
The former Giant is a versatile defender, with prior experience at every infield position (minus catcher) and all three outfield spots over three major league seasons. In 178 career games, he’s hit 21 home runs and driven in 53 while slashing .252/.309/.430 with a 106 wRC+ (100 league average).
The right-handed-hitting utility player enjoyed a career year in 2024, posting 15 home runs, 34 RBIs, a .280/.334/.497 slash line and a 132 wRC+ over 96 games. He impressed against both righties and lefties, but enjoyed most of his success versus southpaws through his .318/.362/.570 slash and 158 wRC+ in 116 plate appearances.
There’s also plenty of base-stealing upside with Fitzgerald, who’s swiped 28 bases in 36 career attempts with the Giants since 2023. Last season, his average sprint speed of 29.6 m.p.h. ranked in the 97th percentile of the majors, per Baseball Savant.
By acquiring Fitzgerald, this trade provides the Blue Jays with an experienced utility player who can be recalled at any point if needed, as he’s already on the 40-man roster. He’ll be part of an interesting infielder group in Buffalo that also includes prospects Josh Kasevich and Josh Rivera, as well as off-season acquisition Carlos Mendoza.
