For the second time this season, the Toronto Blue Jays hit the road.
Things aren’t going great for Canada’s team. Injuries have piled up over the past two weeks, losing Alejandro Kirk and Addison Barger on their most recent trip, as well as George Springer on Saturday against the Minnesota Twins. It’s hard to find ways to win when so many players are on the shelf. That doesn’t even mention Cody Ponce, Shane Bieber, Trey Yesavage, and José Berríos.
It seems like Yesavage and Berríos could be back in the next few weeks, but the Blue Jays’ rotation is essentially a two-man rotation at the moment. They just haven’t been getting any length from Max Scherzer or Eric Lauer, while Patrick Corbin’s start on Saturday wasn’t great.
The good news is that one of those two starts, Kevin Gausman, will make his fourth start of the season to kick-start a nine-game road trip. Their first start is against the Milwaukee Brewers, who have an 8-7 record, but are on a five-game losing streak.
Last time out, Gausman threw five and one-third innings, giving up five hits, three earned runs (the MLB.com box score says two, but it was three), two walks, and striking out five Los Angeles Dodgers. He’ll need to be sharp in this game, as the Brewers had the best record in Major League Baseball in 2025.
The Blue Jays’ hitters are in tough as well, as Jacob Misiorowski is slated to start for the Brewers. Standing at 6’7″, 201 lbs, the right-handed pitcher features a four-seam fastball that sits 98.6 mph, capable of reaching triple digits. That heater plays up thanks to some of the best extension in baseball. Of course, his breaking stuff is excellent as well. This season, Misiorowski has a 41.9 K%, in the 97th percentile, while his 41.8 whiff% is in the 99th percentile.
So who do the Blue Jays have in their starting lineup? With George Springer out of the lineup for at least the next week, Ernie Clement leads off. Daulton Varsho has started to get going, and he’ll bat in the two-hole, while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. bats in his usual third spot.
Jesús Sánchez has found a home in the cleanup spot, which is where he’ll bat on Tuesday. Eloy Jiménez was called up to replace Springer, and he went 2-4 in Sunday’s contest. He bats fifth and will DH. Nathan Lukes is back in the lineup, batting sixth.
The bottom third of the Blue Jays’ lineup is comprised of the struggling Kazuma Okamoto, Andrés Giménez, and Brandon Valenzuela. Interesting fact about Valenzuela, he’ll be the first Blue Jays’ rookie catcher since 2019 to make four consecutive starts.
Let’s set up Tuesday’s series opener.
