The injuries keep piling on for the Toronto Blue Jays.
During Saturday afternoon’s game against the Minnesota Twins, George Springer fouled the ball off his foot in the bottom of the third. He finished the at-bat, wincing as he grounded out. However, he was later removed from the game and diagnosed with a fractured big left toe.
Before the injury, Springer had a tough start to his season. Over 62 plate appearances, the lead-off hitter was slashing .185/.290/.370 with two home runs and six total extra-base hits. It appeared as Springer was rounding a corner, hitting a double in three consecutive games with an RBI in his last three games, his first RBIs since the two home runs in the first four games.
His slow start has contributed to the Blue Jays’ mediocre start to their season. Last season, Springer slashed .309/.399/.560 with 32 home runs in 586 plate appearances for a 166 wRC+. Not only was he the Blue Jays’ best hitter in 2025, it was one of the best seasons of his career.
A stint on the injured list is all but guaranteed, but the question will be how long will the Blue Jays’ best hitter in 2025 be out for? Hopefully, he can avoid a stint on the 60-day Injured List, but a potential replacement in the designated hitter role is Eloy Jiménez. In 43 plate appearances with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons, Jiménez is slashing .257/.372/.371 with a home run.
The Blue Jays’ injury luck to begin the season has been horrendous. Heading into Spring Training, Shane Bieber was expected to begin the season on the injured list. He was joined by Trey Yesavage, José Berríos, and Yimi García. Anthony Santander, who missed most of 2025 with a shoulder injury, required surgery shortly before Spring Training as well.
Then in season, Cody Ponce sprained his ACL in his first big league appearance since 2021, and will likely miss the rest of the season. A few days later, Alejandro Kirk took a foul tip off his thumb, fracturing it and requiring surgery. That wasn’t the only injury the Blue Jays suffered in their series against the Chicago White Sox, as Addison Barger hurt both ankles and is also on the injured list.
Hopefully, they can start to get healthy over the next few months.
