After an 8-5 victory on Friday night backed by great team hitting, the Toronto Blue Jay bats went silent Saturday afternoon, losing 3-1 to Cam Schlittler and the New York Yankees.
On Sunday, the Jays will go for their second series victory this month in the series finale against the Bronx Bombers. As it stands, the Blue Jays a 1-2 in series this month, dropping two of three to both the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies, but winning two of three from the Baltimore Orioles.
After beating up on top tier starting pitching early in the season, the Jays’ bats simply could not get the big hit against Schlittler. Kazuma Okamoto hit a solo home run, his second in as many days, but that was all she wrote in terms of runs for the Blue Jays. In total, they mustered six hits and four walks over the seven innings Schlitter was in the game for.
Kevin Gausman was unhittable, aside from Jasson Domínguez’s solo home run. Over seven innings of work, he allowed one hit and two walks while striking out seven, but failed to get run support once again. Louis Varland finally gave up his first home run of the season to Paul Goldschmidt late, and the Yankees held on to steal game two.
The Blue Jays now sit at a 34-37 record, 1.5 games back of the Athletics for the final Wild Card spot in the American League and nine games back of the Yankees in the American League East. Alejandro Kirk is finally back in the lineup and though he may split playing time with Brandon Valenzuela to manage his surgically repaired thumb, he showed no signs of rust Friday night going three for three with a double and two runs driven in. The Blue Jays lineup is almost at full strength; now is the time to stack wins together.
Patrick Corbin is coming off his worst start of the season last Monday against the Philadelphia Phillies, going just 3.1 innings and giving up five runs and four walks to just three strikeouts. He hasn’t been great to begin June, going eight innings across two starts and allowing nine earned runs to the tune of a 10.13 ERA. He’ll look to stay afloat against a potent Yankee lineup.
On the other hand, Will Warren takes the ball for New York, having given up more than three runs in a start only once this season, when he allowed six to the Texas Rangers on May 6th. Last time out against the Blue Jays in New York, he went five innings allowing three runs on six hits.
Though he’s best remembered by Blue Jay fans for his outing in Toronto last October. He gave up six runs including four home runs to the Jays in game two of the ALDS a season ago, and will look for better results this time around.
The Blue Jays will be without Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for a second straight game as he deals with back soreness, with Alejandro Kirk moving up to the three hole. Andrés Giménez is also dealing with an injury to his left wrist after sliding into first base on Saturday, meaning Davis Schneider fills in batting eighth.
George Springer leads off once again with Ernie Clement batting seventh and Charles McAdoo filling in at first in Guerrero’s absence batting ninth. Three left-handed hitters are in the lineup with Nathan Lukes hitting second, Yohendrick Piñango hitting cleanup and Jesús Sánchez hitting sixth.
Kazuma Okamoto looks to hit a home run in a third consecutive game for second time this season batting fifth, with Kirk backing Corbin behind the plate.
