The Toronto Blue Jays have a chance to leave Maryland with a record above .500.
A 6-5 victory on Friday evening saw the Blue Jays clinch a series split against the Baltimore Orioles at worst. However, with a win on Saturday afternoon, they’ll leave town with no worse than a .500 record, and potentially finish two games above .500 if they can complete the sweep.
The Blue Jays have really started to roll the last two weeks, as they are now 11-5 over their last 16 games. This stretch has included two separate four-game winning streaks, one of which is ongoing. They’ll look to extend that winning streak to five, which would be a season-high.
And they have the right pitcher on the mound to get the job done, as Trey Yesavage is their expected starter. Over six starts this season, the Blue Jays 2024 first-round pick has a 2.25 ERA and 1.91 FIP in 32 innings pitched, with a 27.3 K% and 7.8 BB%.
Last time out, he gave up a season-high five earned runs over a season-high six and two-thirds innings pitched. The right-handed pitcher was let down by defence and should have realistically been tagged with just two earned runs.
On the other side, 6’6 righty Brandon Young starts for the Orioles. This season, the 27-year-old has a 3.47 ERA and 4.74 FIP in 36.1 innings pitched, but only has a 16 K% and 9.9 BB% and has given up five home runs. He pitching better than last season, where he had a 6.24 ERA and 5.35 FIP in 57.2 innings pitched, but if the Blue Jays can remain patient, they can easily get to him.
Charles McAdoo hit his first career home run on Friday, but he’s out of the lineup with the righty on the mound. The Jays will feature four left-handed batters in the lineup, as Nathan Lukes bats second, Daulton Varsho cleans up, Jesús Sánchez bats sixth, and Andrés Giménez hits eight.
George Springer leads off while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hits third, nothing out of the ordinary. Kazuma Okamoto, who hit a two-run home run that got the Blue Jays back into Friday’s game, bats fifth, while Ernie Clement bats ninth. Catching Yesavage is Tyler Heineman, who’ll bat ninth.
