The Toronto Blue Jays look to keep the good times rolling as they welcome the Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game series.
This past weekend, the Blue Jays scored eight runs in each of the four games they played against the Athletics, sweeping the team to give them a season-high win streak of five games and a record of 31-28. They now sit just one game behind the final Wild Card spot, as well as second in the American League East.
That said, the Phillies are a significant step up in competition, as they are second in the National League East with a 36-22 record, with an incredibly deep team. Thankfully, the Jays will avoid Zack Wheeler as the Phillies are changing up their rotation order.
Moreover, the Jays benefit from the return of Andres Gimenez, as he was activated off the Injured List a few hours before the game, as was Tyler Heineman. To make room on the 26-man roster, both Michael Stefanic and Ali Sanchez were designated for assignment.
Gimenez returns to the ninth spot in the batting order, where he found success before his injury. In the five games in the ninth spot, Gimenez slashed .368/.348/.421 with seven hits in 19 plate appearances for a 127 wRC+. While not as good as his first six games, where he hit three home runs, this is the type of production the Jays need from their second basemen.
Speaking of second base, Ernie Clement filled in at the keystone but has returned to third base after a terrific series against the Athletics. That means Barger moves to right field. Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and George Springer make up the top three. Alejandro Kirk is hitting clean-up, and Barger is in the fifth spot, followed by Clement. Their bottom third is made up of Davis Schneider, Myles Straw, and Gimenez.
Bowden Francis gets the ball for the Blue Jays and is searching for his first win since April 18. That said, he pitched well enough in his last start to get the win, going five scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Speaking of pitchers, this series will be the first time Jordan Romano returns to Toronto after being non-tendered by the Jays this past offseason.
