It’s do-or-die time for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Down 3-2 in the American League Championship Series, Sunday evening’s game against the Seattle Mariners needs to be a victory or the Blue Jays’ magical season is over.
It’s a big spot for starter Trey Yesavage, who is making just his sixth big league start after beginning the season in Single-A. In his last start against the Mariners in Game 2, Yesavage gave up five earned runs in four + innings pitched. It’s worth noting that the last two runs were scored after a soft hit single and an intentional walk, before Louis Varland gave up a three-run blast. After the first inning’s three-run home run, Yesavage responded well.
Although Yesavage gets the start, his leash will likely be short, as all pitchers who are physically capable of pitching in this game will be available. That includes Shane Bieber, Chris Bassitt, and potentially Max Scherzer.
Starting for the Mariners is George Kirby, who also made the start in Game 2. After giving up three runs in the first inning of Game 2, the Jays responded with two in the bottom of the first, and managed to tie it in the bottom of the second. Kirby finished with a line of 3 IP, 5 H, 3 R (2 ER), 1 BB, 2 K, so the Blue Jays can get to him.
George Springer was hit directly on the kneecap with a 96 mph fastball on Friday, leaving the game. The good news is that he’s back in the lineup on Sunday for the Blue Jays and leading off.
Following Springer is Nathan Lukes and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Alejandro Kirk bats cleanup, with Daulton Varsho, Ernie Clement, and Addison Barger after him. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is back in the lineup and batting eighth, while Andrés Giménez bats ninth.
