Jonatan Clase will spend Canada Day in Toronto.
On Wednesday, before the Toronto Blue Jays’ series finale against the New York Mets, the Blue Jays announced that Clase is joining the 26-man roster and is set to be active for today’s contest.
Clase was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo after the Blue Jays placed designated hitter George Springer on the paternity list. MLB’s paternity list rules permit Springer to miss 1-3 days, so Springer should return at some point in the upcoming series against the Seattle Mariners.
In 53 games with the Bisons this season, Clase is batting .223 with five home runs and 23 RBIs to go along with a .321 on-base percentage. While Clase is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday, he could be used as a pinch-running option, as the 24-year-old has picked up 17 steals in 21 attempts with the Bisons.
Originally acquired by the Blue Jays from the Mariners on July 26, 2024, in exchange for Yimi García, Clase spent time with the Blue Jays in both 2024 and 2025. In seven games during the 2025 season, Clase batted .350 with one run and two RBIs, giving some excitement that he could be an option for the outfield for years to come.
Clase followed up his 2024 stint by appearing in 34 games with the Blue Jays in 2025. Over 100 at-bats, Clase batted .210 with two home runs and nine RBIs. Clase picked up three steals in four attempts but struggled to make consistent contact, highlighted by his 28 strikeouts over his 100 at-bats, resulting in him falling behind Nathan Lukes, Myles Straw, and Joey Loperfido on the club’s depth chart.
The brief break from the field could benefit Springer as the 36-year-old has struggled through much of 2026. Through 63 games, Springer is batting .221 with eight home runs and 21 RBIs, and was forced to the 15-day injured list in April due to a right big toe fracture.
