Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider delivered yet another lengthy slew of injury updates ahead of Monday’s series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays.
After the club officially placed Addison Barger back on the 10-day IL earlier in the afternoon, Schneider shared that it was due to right elbow joint inflammation sustained coming out of Saturday’s return versus the Los Angeles Angels. The 26-year-old outfielder received a cortisone injection on Monday and will now be shut down from baseball activities for 3-4 days.
There is, however, optimism that this will be a brief stint compared to his previous IL placement, which kept him out nearly a month due to soreness in both ankles. Last weekend’s MRI confirmed he didn’t sustain any structural damage or loose bodies around the right elbow.
Schneider also said he doesn’t believe Barger’s 101.5-m.p.h. laser from right field in Saturday’s contest was the main culprit behind this injury, instead citing it as one of a few contributing factors.
“He’s pissed,” said Schneider of Barger’s reaction to landing back on the IL after just one game. “For him and for a lot of guys, it’s been a frustrating start to the year.“It was nice to get him back, and we’ll just have to wait a couple more, couple more days or a couple more weeks.”
The Blue Jays’ skipper also provided a few other updates, including the details of Shane Bieber’s upcoming live BP session at the player development complex down in Dunedin, Fla. He’s scheduled to throw one up (or one inning) against minor-league hitters, who he’ll face for the first time since entering camp with right forearm fatigue.
Bieber is still probably another week or two from beginning a rehab assignment. But he’s “continuing to go in the right direction,” as Schneider said.
Separately at the PDC, Nathan Lukes (left hamstring) began a running progression last week and is slated to run the bases on Thursday or Friday. After that, if everything feels fine, the plan is to have him play Single-A rehab games this weekend.
Alejandro Kirk also continues to progress in Dunedin, advancing to hitting off a batting tee after starting to take dry swings with a bat late last week. He hasn’t done any catching or throwing yet as his fractured left thumb continues to heal. But those progressions should come later this month.
On a tad more concerning note, Yimi García told the team he felt “more sore than he kind of thought” he would following his first rehab outing in the Florida Complex League last Thursday, per Schneider, during which he pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run on two hits with zero walks or strikeouts.
The Blue Jays don’t have a confirmed date for García’s next rehab outing, but they’ll let the 35-year-old reliever dictate when that next appearance comes based on how he’s feeling. He’ll continue throwing in the meantime and hopes to return to game action at some point later this week.
