The first slate of in-season injury updates has arrived, as a few dozen reporters and broadcasters closely gathered inside manager John Schneider’s office prior to Monday’s series opener between the Toronto Blue Jays and Colorado Rockies.
Before opening the floor for questions, Schneider provided the latest details surrounding four pitchers who opened this season on the injured list — José Berríos, Shane Bieber, Trey Yesavage and Yimi García. So, let’s dive in.
Latest on Berríos, García at player development complex
Schneider began his pre-game media availability by revealing that both Berríos and García are due to throw bullpen sessions at the player development complex in Dunedin, Fla., on Tuesday. The former is scheduled for a two-up side and will also toss live batting practice on Saturday.
Since Berríos was built up to 65 pitches during the spring before being shut down (stress fracture), the veteran righty won’t be starting from scratch as he resumes his starter’s build-up. The team hopes this can be an expedited process — as long as he remains symptom-free, of course.
Things are sort of status quo for García. This is all about gradually building him up as he recovers from off-season elbow surgery, and he’ll need to pitch in at least a handful of rehab games before activation from the IL.
Trey Yesavage to throw three-inning sim game
Yesavage is progressing to the next step in his throwing program and is scheduled to pitch a three-inning simulated game at the PDC on Friday, aiming for roughly 45 pitches. He had previously been limited to two-inning outings in controlled environments like this.
There will come a point when he advances to minor-league games. However, since most affiliates won’t begin their 2026 seasons until later this week — except for Triple-A, as the Buffalo Bisons opened their campaign last Friday — the Blue Jays’ brass is waiting a bit longer before starting his rehab assignment clock.
After Yesavage completes his next start, the plan is to shorten the gap between his outings from 9-10 days — put in place to supply extra rest coming off his right shoulder impingement — to more of a regular starter’s schedule (5-6 days).
Shane Bieber (finally) making first mound appearance
At long last, Bieber will throw off a mound at the PDC for the first time on Saturday. The goal is to ease him in with his first side session, which will likely last around 20-25 pitches, according to Schneider.
Throughout spring training, the 30-year-old starter — who opened this season on the 15-day IL to provide additional time for building up after reporting to camp with right forearm fatigue — was restricted to playing catch, progressing from 90 to 120 feet. Now, he’ll officially toe the rubber for the first time since pitching out of the bullpen in Game 7 of the World Series.
The Blue Jays can continue to take their time with Bieber, given the current depth of their starting rotation. We’re still a ways off from establishing any sort of return timetable, but these are still important baby steps.
