The Toronto Blue Jays are trending in the right direction when it comes to pitcher injuries.
Speaking to reporters on Opening Day, manager John Schneider provided some updates on Jose Berrios, Yimi Garcia, Shane Bieber, and Trey Yesavage.
Both Berrios and Garcia threw earlier today at the Player Development Complex, with the Puerto Rican product tossing 25 pitches while the Jays reliever went 22 pitches. Berrios and Garcia were feeling good post-throwing, and the team will be re-evaluating tomorrow with both pitchers to see whether there are any lingering effects before moving forward.
Yesavage and Bieber are in Toronto with the club for the weekend and will return to Florida at some point next week. Both pitchers are expected to take the mound at some point early next week in Florida, with the next steps to follow depending on how things turn out in their sessions.
It appears that things are still in the early stages for all four pitchers, although Garcia may be a bit further along, considering his role in the bullpen doesn’t require as much ramp-up in terms of pitch count. Per Schneider, things appear to be in the early stages and will be ‘wait and see’ until tomorrow to see how Berrios and Garcia respond to their sessions.
With Bieber, Berrios, and Yesavage all on the IL, the Blue Jays enter Opening Day with a rotation consisting of Kevin Gausman, Dylan Cease, Eric Lauer, Max Scherzer, and Cody Ponce. When the trio of arms are ready to go, the Blue Jays will have some tough decisions to make in the rotation that will see an arm or two heading to the bullpen.
For the bullpen, the one wild card is Rule 5 draft pick Spencer Miles, who made the Jays’ Opening Day roster amid a crowded bullpen picture that will only get more complicated when Garcia is healthy and needing a roster spot.
