The Arizona Fall League is nearing its end.
On Sunday, the league hosted its annual Fall Stars Game. Only one Toronto Blue Jays’ prospect participated in the event, left-handed reliever Kai Peterson.
Drafted in the 20th round of the 2023 draft, Peterson pitched in relief during the sixth inning, entering with a 4-1 lead. The first batter he faced, Esmerlyn Valdez, popped up on the second pitch. The 23-year-old walked the next two batters, but got the 2024 third overall pick, Charlie Condon, to ground out into a double play.
Peterson threw 14 pitches, six of which were for strikes. Only two of those pitches were sliders, generating no swings. The rest of his pitches were sinkers, with the pitch averaging a tick over 91 mph. It generated five total swings, but Peterson failed to get a batter to whiff.
Although Peterson was the lone Blue Jays’ prospect to appear in the Fall Stars game, he is joined by eight other prospects from the Blue Jays. On the pitching side of things, Alex Amalfi has made five starts and has a 9.95 ERA in 12.2 innings pitched.
Yondrei Rojas only pitched 2.1 innings, giving up eight earned runs. Kelena Sauer’s ERA sits at 6.75 through four innings, while Chay Yeager has an 11.37 ERA in 6.1 innings. Through seven and one-third innings, Peterson has a 7.36 ERA.
Things are slightly better on the offensive side of things for the Blue Jays. Cutter Coffey is slashing .317/.397/.383 with four doubles in 68 plate appearances. Josh Kasevich has played a significant number of games, slashing .255/.419/.255 with 14 singles in 74 plate appearances.
Cade Doughty was a late addition to the team, and he’s hit a home run in his 14 plate appearances. Catcher Edward Duran has three triples and two doubles, but is slashing just .167/.242/.433 in 33 plate appearances.
As it stands, just three games are remaining in the Arizona Fall League regular season, and it isn’t looking too great for the Glendale Desert Dogs, the team that harbours the Blue Jays’ prospects. Thanks to an ongoing four-game winning streak, the Desert Dogs have a 10-15 record, seven and a half games behind the leading Scottsdale Scorpions.
However, four of the six teams in the league make the postseason, and the Desert Dogs are in striking distance. They’re one game behind the Peoria Javelinas and are a game and a half behind the Mesa Solar Sox. The Desert Dogs face the Solar Sox on Monday, with their other two games against the last-placed Salt River Rafters and first-placed Scorpions.
