John Schneider says that Bo Bichette is running, hitting and fielding today. Still “a few more boxes to check”, but sounds encouraging. When I asked what’s likelier: SS, 2B, DH? “I could see all three of those things happening, to be honest with you.” #BlueJays
Blue Jays face key World Series decision: Should George Springer or Bo Bichette be the DH?

With Bo Bichette saying that he’ll be ready for the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and with the Toronto Blue Jays seemingly in agreement, the tough decision now becomes where to fit him into a roster that has made it this far into the postseason without him.
Of course, the question isn’t whether Bichette’s bat is good enough to fit in (.311 average and a second in MLB 181 hits during the regular season), rather, who would he replace and what position he’d play.
Sliding him into the DH slot would make sense, easing him back into the game instead of dropping into his natural position of shortstop – one of the most important defensive positions that Andres Gimenez has locked down for the Jays this October.
But the ALCS Game Seven hero, George Springer, is already at DH. Springer has mashed to a .930 OPS this postseason, meaning he has to stay in the lineup, whether that be at DH or the outfield. With that said, here’s what manager John Schneider told the media regarding Bichette’s situation on Thursday:
How would those different scenarios play out? Let’s take a look…
Springer remains DH, Bichette enters as shortstop
For this to work, a little infield shuffle is required. The one most likely to be moved to the bench in this scenario would appear on paper to be Isiah Kiner-Falefa (assuming her remains on the active roster), with Andres Gimenez moving over to second base.
Ever since Anthony Santander went out with an injury, Addison Barger took over in right field, and Ernie Clement moved from second to third. Kiner-Falefa has been serviceable at second, but taking his bat out for Bichette’s seems like the easiest move here.
That would also leave open the possibility of Kiner-Falefa coming off the bench as a defensive replacement for Bichette or others late in games if needed.
Bichette takes over as DH, Springer returns to the outfield
In this scenario, Addison Barger is relieved of his duties in right field to make way for Springer. Taking Barger’s big left-handed bat (.889 OPS this postseason) out of the lineup would be tough, though, so he likely moves to third base, where he played 91 games during the 2025 regular season. The Jays could also move Springer to left field and put Lukes on the bench as well, should Schneider so desire.
That would move Clement as well, who likely ends up back at second base, where he started the ALCS. This scenario requires more shuffling, but the result appears to be the same: Kiner-Falefa getting taken off the starting lineup.
Will Springer be ready to play the outfield after a long stint as DH? His skip Schneider says yes:
John Schneider says George Springer is ready to play the outfield if needed.
This seems like a probable scenario, given that Gimenez’s defence up the middle has been so valuable and Bichette is coming off a fairly long injury.
Bichette to second base, Springer stays as DH
Not to brush this scenario off, but Bichette has never played an MLB game at second base. Would it make sense for him to play there someday? Maybe. Should that day be game one of the Blue Jays’ first World Series in 32 years? Probably not…
If this does happen, you can likely guess by now, but it would be Kiner-Falefa getting swapped out, just this time one-for-one, no extra shuffling required. If the Jays say it’s a possibility, you can’t discount it, but it does seem like it has less of a chance of happening than the other two for a big reason.
We’ll know what the Blue Jays’ decision is shortly, with game one of the World Series set for later tonight at the Rogers Centre.
