Lenyn Sosa has officially set out on a rehab assignment.
On Tuesday night, Sosa appeared in Single-A with the Dunedin Blue Jays during their 8-3 win over the Tampa Tarpons.
Playing in his first game since June 26 due to nagging soreness in his wrist following being hit by a Sandy Alcantara fastball back on May 26, Sosa batted third, as the designated hitter and went 1-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch and an RBI.
Sosa was hit by Tarpons right-hander and former Toronto Blue Jay Yerry Rodriguez, who is also on a rehab assignment, with a 94.8 MPH sinker on the first pitch of his first at-bat.
Facing Sabier Marte in the bottom of the third inning, Sosa engaged in a six-pitch at-bat before grounding out to shortstop on a ball that came off the bat at 93 MPH. Sosa picked up an RBI by bringing home Blaine Bullard from third base.
Squaring off with Marte once again to open the bottom of the sixth, Sosa got ahead in the count 2-0 before driving a double to left field on a fly ball that left the bat at 95.3 MPH. Upon reaching second base, Sosa was lifted for a pinch-runner, ending his evening.
Acquired in April from the Chicago White Sox, Sosa has appeared in 28 games with the Blue Jays this season and is batting .188 with one home run and six RBIs. While Sosa likely still needs more time to build up, and his roster spot is not exactly clear, the one thing working in his favour is that the Blue Jays have struggled against left-handers this season, leaving the door open for him to prove he can hit lefties down the stretch.
