It’s a pivotal night for Team Canada at the 2026 World Baseball Classic as they prepare to face the host nation for Pool A in their most important game of the tournament.
Canada enters the matchup needing a strong performance after splitting its first two games. The Canadians opened the tournament with an impressive 8–2 win over Colombia, but dropped a narrow 4–3 loss to Panama the following day after surrendering a sixth-inning rally in which the defence allowed three unearned runs, as Canada committed three errors throughout the game.
Puerto Rico, meanwhile, has been one of the most dominant teams in the tournament so far. The host nation enters tonight’s matchup with a perfect 3–0 record after defeating Colombia (5–0), Panama (4–3), and Cuba (4–1), already securing a place in the quarterfinals before their final pool game against Canada.
Even though Puerto Rico has already clinched advancement, the stakes remain extremely high for Canada. In the World Baseball Classic format, each pool consists of five teams playing a round-robin schedule, with only the top two advancing to the knockout stage.
For Canada, a win would significantly improve its chances of advancing from Pool A and potentially claiming the final qualifying spot with a close result against Cuba tomorrow. A loss, however, would leave the Canadians needing help in the standings to avoid being overtaken and falling short of the quarterfinals.
Manager Ernie Whitt will turn to Jordan Balazovic to start one of the biggest games of Canada’s tournament.
Balazovic, a 6-foot-5 right-hander from Mississauga, Ontario, was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the fifth round of the 2016 MLB Draft and spent nearly eight seasons developing in their system before making his major-league debut in 2023. During that rookie season, he appeared in 18 games for Minnesota, posting a 4.44 ERA with 17 strikeouts over 24.1 innings.
His path since then has included several stops. After a difficult start to the 2024 season in Triple-A, he was released by the Twins before signing with the Doosan Bears of the Korea Baseball Organization. There, he returned to a starting role and posted a 4.26 ERA with 69 strikeouts over 57 innings across 11 starts.
Following that stint overseas, Balazovic signed a minor-league deal with the Detroit Tigers and entered 2025 looking to rebuild momentum. Pitching in Triple-A, he showed improvement, posting a 3.69 ERA over 53.2 innings while generating strong whiff rates and maintaining control of the strike zone with a 3.9 BB/9.
Against Puerto Rico, Balazovic will need to work efficiently and command the strike zone. With the World Baseball Classic’s pool-play pitch limit set at 65 pitches, he will likely be asked to navigate only the first few innings against a lineup filled with major-league hitters who will look to wear him down early and get to the Canadian bullpen.
Opposing him is veteran right-hander former José De León, who was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 24th round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Southern University. He made his MLB debut in 2016 and has since bounced around various organizations, including the Toronto Blue Jays.
In his major-league career, De León has appeared in 35 games (eight starts), compiling a 7.13 ERA but demonstrating elite strikeout ability with a career 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings.
While that strikeout rate might suggest overpowering velocity, De León’s fastball typically tops out around 91 mph. His success comes primarily from his breaking ball — a sharp slurve that averages roughly 15.5 inches of horizontal movement.
Fans may remember De León from his performance in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, when he threw 5.2 perfect innings and struck out 10 batters in Puerto Rico’s combined 8-inning perfect game against Israel.
Puerto Rico’s pitching staff has been one of the strongest units in this year’s tournament. Through three games, they have allowed only four total runs while consistently shutting down opposing offences late in games.
The Canadian lineup, however, features several players capable of changing a game quickly with their power. Top prospect Owen Caissie has been one of Canada’s standout performers early in the tournament, hitting a home run and driving in multiple runs in the opening win over Colombia. Other contributors, such as Abraham Toro and the Naylor brothers, have also led the charge for the offence so far.
That offensive capability has historically been a strength for Canada in the World Baseball Classic. In the 2023 tournament, Canada finished fourth in team OPS, behind Team USA, and scored 18 runs in a pool game against Great Britain.
This year’s roster is somewhat different for Puerto Rico, with several notable absences, including Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa, Javier Báez, and Toronto Blue Jays starter José Berríos, until he received clearance to join Puerto Rico today. Even so, they still feature a deep roster of major-league talent.
Through the first three games of the tournament, that depth has been evident as the team has continued to find ways to win.
The environment will also be a factor. Tonight’s game takes place at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, one of the most energetic venues in international baseball. Puerto Rican fans have created a playoff-like atmosphere throughout pool play, giving the host nation definitive home-field advantage.
For Canada, executing the fundamentals will be critical. Limiting walks, avoiding defensive mistakes, and capitalizing early against De León could determine whether they can pull off their biggest win of the tournament.
Tonight, the Canadian squad will need to stay composed in one of the loudest environments of the WBC to keep their quarterfinal hopes alive and chase the program’s first-ever quarterfinal berth.
For Puerto Rico, the objective is simpler: maintain momentum and finish pool play undefeated before heading into the knockout stage. For Canada, however, the stakes could not be higher.
