It looks like the Toronto Blue Jays’ rotation could have reinforcements sooner rather than later.
On Friday afternoon, the Dunedin Blue Jays announced that rookie sensation Trey Yesavage is set to make a rehab assignment for the team on Friday evening. It’s expected he’ll throw three innings.
This is a much-needed development, as the team is likely set to have a bullpen game at some point during this weekend series. In his first big league appearance since 2021, Cody Ponce suffered an ACL sprain and is out for a significant period of time according to Blue Jays manager John Schneider.
Who knows what Ponce’s time frame looks like, but it seems like Yesavage will be the first of the four injured starters to return to the rotation. Things can change, but it looks like José Berríos will be second and Shane Bieber will be the third starter to return, Schneider noted.
Getting Yesavage back in the rotation will be huge for the Blue Jays, not just so they can avoid bullpen games, but also because he’s a darn good pitcher. Drafted 20th overall in the 2024 draft, Yesavage made his professional debut in Single-A to begin the 2025 season. By the end of the season, Yesavage joined the big league rotation.
Three good starts later, he was announced to their playoff roster, had a record-setting postseason debut, then helped the Blue Jays win a much-needed Game 5 in the World Series. The good news is that Yesavage is still considered a rookie due to just 14 days of service time, meaning he’s eligible to win Rookie of the Year. If he does that, the Jays will be entitled to a pick following the first round in 2027.
The Dunedin Blue Jays’ game starts at 6:30 PM ET. There was intrigue surrounding the game before the Yesavage news, as 2025 first round pick JoJo Parker is set to make his professional debut. All four of the Blue Jays’ “A” affiliates are in action on Friday.
