The Toronto Blue Jays were in the double-digits when it came to players representing their respective nations at the World Baseball Classic. At one point, their entire infield was at the tournament, and numerous prospects were brought in to fill in the gaps left by the departed crew.
With the tournament set to end tonight in the final game between the United States and Venezuela, that number has now dwindled to just four players.
Team USA: Ernie Clement, Jeff Hoffman, Tyler Rogers
When you look at the Blue Jays players who remain in the World Baseball Classic on the final day, only one of the players on Team USA has actually been with the squad since Day 1.
Ernie Clement was named to the roster right from the start and has suited up in four of the six games along the way. The Jays’ infielder has been one of the best stories in baseball over the years, turning from a DFA candidate on the A’s to a playoff record holder in 2025 to now being named to one of the deepest USA rosters the nation has ever assembled at the WBC.
Of the four games, Clement has made two starts and come off the bench in the other two in either a pinch run or defensive replacement scenario. His best game came in Pool play against Great Britain, where he was 1 for 3 at the plate with two walks and three runs scored. Outside of that game, Clement has gone hitless in his other two at-bats. He will likely be on the bench for the final tonight in favour of infielder Brice Turang.
Joining Clement on the roster are relievers Tyler Rogers and Jeff Hoffman. Both right-handers weren’t named to the initial roster, but were added to the reserve list of pitchers the squad could call upon during the knockout stages of the tournament.
Rogers was called up first and was a key part of Team USA’s win over the Dominican Republic on Saturday. In the bottom of the fifth inning with runners on first and second with one out, Rogers was brought into the game to face the ever dangerous Juan Soto at the plate – a former teammate of his on the Mets. Rogers got the Dominican slugger to chase an outside sinker, and the resulting groundball got the reliever and Team USA out of a jam with the score still 2-1 in favour of the Americans.
Hoffman was added to the semifinal roster in favour of southpaw Clayton Kershaw, but wasn’t used in the game this past weekend.
Team Venezuela: Andres Gimenez
Venezuela has been on a roll at the World Baseball Classic. They bested the 2023 champions in Team Japan in the quarterfinal and are now on their way to the finals for the first time in their nation’s history.
Blue Jays infielder Andres Gimenez has been a part of almost every game. He made two starts during the Pool play, playing against the Netherlands and Nicaragua, but has been used off the bench since the knockout stages. Splitting time between second base and shortstop, Gimenez has gone 1 for 8 (.125) at the plate with one walk and two runs scored. Venezuela has turned to Gleyber Torres and Ezequiel Tovar up the middle over the past few games, and it wouldn’t be surprising if the club sticks with that infield combo again against the United States.
Look for the Jays’ infielder to come off the bench late in the game as a defensive replacement.
