It’s always fun to see a surprise breakout from a prospect.
On Friday afternoon, the Toronto Blue Jays’ Double-A team, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, announced that Jay Harry had been promoted to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. After looking at his start to his season, one has to wonder how it didn’t happen earlier.
In his 48 games in Manchester, New Hampshire, Harry slashed .325/.354/.580 with eight home runs in 179 plate appearances, good for a 140 wRC+. His eight home runs are tied for fifth, alongside Charles McAdoo, Josh Rivera, Yorman Licourt, and Dub Gleed (who has had a breakout of his own).
To say this breakout came out of left field would be an understatement. Drafted in the sixth round of the 2023 draft by the Minnesota Twins, Harry made his debut and slashed .339/.434/.468 with a home run to end the season. In 340 plate appearances with the Twins’ High-A team in 2024, he slashed .214/.306/.349 with eight home runs for a 93 wRC+.
At the same time, former Blue Jays reliever Trevor Richards had several tough outings, tanking his trade value as the Blue Jays looked to sell ahead of the 2024 trade deadline. They managed to find a trade for the struggling reliever, sending him to the Twins for Harry.
Harry, 23, didn’t have a particularly strong end to his 2024 season, slashing just .210/.259/.420 with four home runs in 108 plate appearances with the High-A Vancouver Canadians. His 2025 season wasn’t great either, slashing 228/.302/.327 with three home runs in 225 plate appearances with the Canadians, then .153/.255/.226 with two home runs in 141 plate appearances with the Fisher Cats.
But the switch has flipped this season. Harry had a strong end to his 2023 season over 129 plate appearances, but he hasn’t had the sustained success like he’s having this season. The utility player’s walk rate is down, plummeting from 9.8% to 3.9%, while he’s striking out at about the same rate as last season.
It's a Harry homer in Hartford!!!
However, his aggressiveness has already led to eight home runs, four shy of matching his career best, as well as 11 doubles and four triples. Triple-A will be a test for Harry, as he’ll get his first real look at pitchers who’ve pitched at the big league level. If he can stay hot he could position himself for a potential callup in 2027.
Harry’s promotion wasn’t the only one in recent times. Jack Nedrow was promoted to the Canadians. Additionally, Canadian Owen Gregg returns to the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays. So far this season, Gregg is slashing .414/.460/.552 with a home run in 64 plate appearances, good for a 162 wRC+.
