Arjun Nimmala is back at Single-A Dunedin again, on rehab assignment as the 20-year-old continues to recover from a hamstring strain. The Toronto Blue Jays prospect, ranked No. 2 in the organization per MLB Pipeline, was placed on the seven-day minor-league injured list on May 30 after sustaining the injury while running to first base. He began a rehab assignment in the Florida Complex League late last month, appearing in three games with the club’s FCL affiliate, recording two hits in five at-bats with a pair of sac-flys as well as a walk and a strikeout each.
Just as Nimmala began his rehab assignment, though, he was hit by a pitch in the knee during his first plate appearance on June 26 — with the club immediately removing him from his first rehab game. But after receiving a few days off, he returned to action on Monday and is expected to suit up with Dunedin on Thursday.
Nimmala will be looking to build on his strong finale with the FCL Blue Jays when he makes his 2026 season debut at Single-A. In his third and final complex league game, the right-handed-hitting shortstop went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and finished with a bright red Baseball Savant page, with all four of his batted balls producing an exit velocity of at least 100 m.p.h. — topping out at 110.6.
Before hitting the IL, the 2023 20th-overall selection had been enjoying plenty of success following his Double-A promotion, posting a .311 AVG and .382 OBP while earning seven walks to 13 strikeouts over his last 16 games with New Hampshire, accounting for a 109 wRC+ (100 league average).
Last season, Nimmala spent the entire 2025 campaign at High-A Vancouver. This time around, the Blue Jays’ brass is letting his offensive production take the wheel, and after a blazing start with the Canadians (123 wRC+ in 23 games) earlier this season, he received a well-deserved promotion to Double-A.
Given that Nimmala won’t turn 21 until October, the organization probably doesn’t want to put too much on his plate quite yet in terms of the level of competition he’s exposed to. However, his bat will likely be the deciding factor. If this offensive surge continues upon returning to Double-A, perhaps there’s a chance he makes a late-season cameo at Triple-A.
